Forward Fernando Pisani will be out of the Edmonton Oilers’ lineup indefinitely after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disorder. “We are very concerned about Fernando’s medical condition and we wish him nothing but a full and healthy recovery,” general manager Kevin Lowe in a statement Tuesday.
Maple Leafs forward Mark Bell was suspended indefinitely without pay by the NHL on Tuesday after his plea last month of no contest to drunken-driving and hit-and-run charges. Bell was placed into Stage 2 of the NHL’s substance abuse program. He has been part of Stage 1 since last September, when he was arrested in California.
Jeremy Roenick thinks he still has the skills and the desire to help the San Jose Sharks’ next run at the Stanley Cup. He’ll even keep his mouth shut to prove it. The nine-time All-Star signed a one-year, $500,000 contract with the Sharks on Tuesday, postponing retirement for the chance to get his 500th goal while chasing his first championship.
The Nashville Predators signed forward Josh Langfeld to a one-year deal Tuesday. Langfeld, 30, spent last season with Detroit where he played in 33 games with the Red Wings and 38 with its AHL affiliate, Grand Rapids. He scored 32 points for Grand Rapids. He has 32 points (9 goals, 23 assists) in 141 career NHL games and has played five seasons with Ottawa, San Jose, Boston and Detroit.
Pierre Turgeon is expected to end his 19-season NHL career by announcing his retirement Wednesday. The 38-year-old is to meet with the media at agent Bob Sauve’s office in Laval, north of Montreal. Turgeon, an unrestricted free agent, was expected to retire after groin and calf injuries limited him to only 17 games last season with the Colorado Avalanche.
Florida Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester pleaded guilty to one count of impaired driving. Judge Michael Allen fined the player $1,000 Tuesday and banned him from driving for a year. The 23-year-old Bouwmeester, who makes $2.25 million this year, was arrested during the summer of 2006 near a popular nightclub area in Edmonton.
Center Jeremy Roenick signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, postponing retirement for another shot at a Stanley Cup. The nine-time All-Star’s career seemed over after he scored only 28 points in 70 games with the Phoenix Coyotes last season. The 37-year-old center has 495 goals and 675 assists in an 18-year career also spent with Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
The local group that put down a $10 million nonrefundable deposit to buy the Nashville Predators for $193 million signed a deal Friday that includes the purchase agreement with current owner Craig Leipold. The deal had to be finalized by Friday before the local group’s exclusive negotiating rights expired.
Patrick Marleau agreed to a two-year, $12.6 million contract extension with the San Jose Sharks on Friday, keeping the longtime captain with the club through 2010. After months of negotiations and public speculation on Marleau’s future, he finalized a deal two weeks before training camp opens to stay with the club that drafted him in 1997.
The Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks have capped season ticket sales at 15,000 and opened a waiting list for all future orders. The team made the move to give fans a chance to purchase single-game tickets for the upcoming season.
