Ellis’ 1st NHL goal propels Red Wings

San Jose Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov, right, of Kazakhstan, is blocked by Detroit Red Wings left wing Tomas Holmstrom, of Sweden, as Nabakov lets the puck get past him for a goal on a shot by Detroit Red Wings left wing Henrik Zetterberg, from Sweden, in the second period of an NHL hockey game in San Jose, Calif., Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007.

While the Red Wings already have made strides since last season’s playoffs, the San Jose Sharks keep falling into the same ruts that bogged them down against Detroit last spring. Matt Ellis put the Red Wings ahead with his first NHL goal on a no-look backhand with 12:26 to play, and Detroit rallied for a 4-2 victory Thursday night in a telling postseason rematch.

Even when Alex Ovechkin goes without a shot, the Washington Capitals seem to be able to score at will, especially at home. Ovechkin did not put a puck on net all game for the first time in nearly four years, and it didn’t matter one bit, because T.J. Oshie scored twice and set up John Carlson’s go-ahead goal for the NHL-leading Capitals, who collected their 11th consecutive home victory by beating the Detroit Red Wings 6-3 Thursday night. Washington has scored at least five goals in each of its past 10 games at home.
