By Larry Fine RANCHO MIRAGE (Officialsportsbetting.com) – French veteran Karine Icher fired a five-under-par 67 to grab the early first-round lead on Thursday over an impressive chasing pack at the ANA Inspiration, the first women’s major of the year. Icher birdied three of the four par-threes in taking a one-shot lead over American Michelle Wie and South Koreans Ryu So-yeon, the world number three, Park Sung-Hyun and amateur Seong Eun-jeong on a calm morning in the California desert. Another shot back, at three-under, were Korean Jenny Shin and long-hitting American Lexi Thompson as the early starters took advantage before high winds were expected to blow across the long layout to challenge the afternoon wave.

The Indiana Pacers are bringing back Lance Stephenson. More than two years after the brash 6-foot-5 guard left in free agency, the Pacers re-signed Stephenson on Thursday – just in time to fill a gaping hole as they try to make a final playoff push. Stephenson is scheduled to appear at a news conference in Indianapolis on Friday afternoon and is expected to make his first game appearance Sunday at Cleveland.

Cam Newton is at home recovering from surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder on Thursday. Dr. Pat Connor performed the surgery on the Panthers quarterback’s throwing shoulder at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. ”Dr. Connor was pleased with the results of the surgery and Cam is at home resting,” Panthers head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said.
