Cleveland Indians fans celebrate after the Indians beat the Oakland Athletics 4-3 in a baseball game Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, in Cleveland.

A pitcher who was supposed to start the season in the minors has helped put the Indians on the verge of their first division title since 2001. It’s been that kind of year for Cleveland. Fausto Carmona won his 18th game and Ryan Garko and Jhonny Peralta hit back-to-back homers as Cleveland beat the Oakland Athletics 4-3 on Friday night to lower its magic number for clinching the AL Central to two.

Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox, right, argues with home plate umpire Bill Miller after Braves pitcher Ron Mahay walks a batter with bases loaded against the Milwaukee Brewers during the eighth inning of a baseball game, Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, in Atlanta. Cox was ejected from the game which Milwaukee won 4-1.

The Milwaukee Brewers knew they needed to beat Tim Hudson and the Atlanta Braves on Friday night, given that the Chicago Cubs had already won earlier in the day. Corey Hart stayed patient and found a way to get the job done. Hart keyed a three-run, eighth inning rally and the Brewers rallied to beat the Braves 4-1, staying close to the Cubs in the NL Central race.

A billboard on Sheffield Avenue outside of Wrigley Field reads 'So close you can taste it' as fans watch a baseball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, in Chicago. The Cubs won 13-8, increasing their lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central division to two games.

The wind whipping out on a warm afternoon, the Chicago Cubs found the perfect conditions to pad their home run total and maintain their lead in the NL Central. “It was a good day to hit. But you can’t blame the wind. You still got to hit the ball,” said Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who connected on a pair of three-run homers to lead a wild 13-8 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.
