Versatile center Mike Fisher agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $21 million with the Ottawa Senators on Monday. Fisher had five goals and five assists in 20 playoff games last season for the Senators, who reached the Stanley Cup finals for the first time. His 73 playoff hits ranked second overall.
Canucks defenseman Sami Salo is out indefinitely due to a hairline fracture in his left wrist. Salo, 33, entering his eighth season in the NHL and fifth with Vancouver, was injured while delivering a check during an intrasquad game Sunday. It is the latest setback for Salo, who spent the summer recovering from groin, back and shoulder problems.
Titans owner Bud Adams said more than a year ago that coach Jeff Fisher wouldn’t be going anywhere. On Monday, the NFL’s longest-tenured coach with his current team said he hopes to finish his career in Tennessee. Adams picked up the 2007 option on Fisher’s contract at the end of last season when the Titans rallied from an 0-5 start to finish 8-8, and an extension had been expected since then.

Barry Bonds was out of the San Francisco Giants’ lineup for their game against Arizona on Monday night, and could get a few more days off to rest his sprained right big toe. “He’s still pretty sore,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He needs more time.” Bochy said the club was not considering resting Bonds for the remainder of the season.
Despite a disappointing season and impending free agency, Andruw Jones still hopes to be playing for the Braves in 2008. There have been no contract negotiations between the team and agent Scott Boras, though Jones is likely to be more affordable than he was at the start of the season. Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder might have additional tests on his surgically repaired left shoulder after struggling in all three starts this month. New Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider will be out at least four weeks after breaking a bone in the left ankle during his first preseason game with the Stanley Cup champions. An MRI taken Sunday revealed that Schneider sustained a non-displaced fracture of the ankle Saturday night in Anaheim’s 3-2 victory over Los Angeles.
Erik Cole scored with 47.2 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals on Sunday in the preseason opener for both teams. Cole’s second goal of the game came with the Hurricanes holding a two-man advantage. Eric Staal’s shot from the slot tipped off Cole’s stick and sailed past goalie Michal Neuvirth.
The Calgary Flames overcame a pair of obstacles to earn their first overtime victory of the season. Mark Giordano scored 4:30 into overtime to give Calgary a 5-4 win over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night, a victory marred by an injury to leading scorer Jarome Iginla.
