Cole lifts Hurricanes past Caps in OT

Carolina Hurricanes' Erik Cole (26) battles with Washington Capitals' Mike Green (52) as Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth, right, defends during the third period of an NHL preseason hockey game in Raleigh, N.C., Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007. Carolina won 4-3.

Erik Cole scored with 47.2 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals on Sunday in the preseason opener for both teams. Cole’s second goal of the game came with the Hurricanes holding a two-man advantage. Eric Staal’s shot from the slot tipped off Cole’s stick and sailed past goalie Michal Neuvirth.
