Former Miami Heat player James Posey has agreed to plead guilty to reckless driving in connection with an incident in April on Miami Beach, prosecutors said Friday. Posey, who is unsigned, agreed to a deal involving lesser charges. He was originally arrested on drunken-driving charges after Miami Beach police pulled him over for stopping in the middle of a road April 9.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman called Sam Pollock’s influence on the hockey world “unmatched” a day after the former Montreal Canadiens vice president and general manager’s death. “Sam Pollock’s legacy extends far beyond the nine Stanley Cup championships the Canadiens won in his 14 years of leadership,” Bettman said in a statement.
The New Jersey Devils kept a major piece of their defense together, signing Paul Martin to a three-year, $11.5 million contract on Thursday. Bobby Carpenter, the first American-born player to score 50 goals in an NHL season, will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in October. The newest class of members that includes goalie John Vanbiesbrouck, forward Aaron Broten and former Michigan Tech coach John MacInnes was revealed Wednesday by USA Hockey.
The Chicago Cubs and Carlos Zambrano finally have a deal. The ace right-hander agreed Friday to a five-year, $91.5 million contract extension to stay with the only team he’s been with his entire career. The deal includes a vesting option for a sixth season. New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese hasn’t talked to holdout defensive end Michael Strahan in a while and has no clue when the seven-time Pro Bowl player will make a decision on whether to retire. “We would like for him to be here if he’s going to be here, just for him to get some work,” Reese said Thursday at training camp at the University at Albany.
