The New England Patriots released 11-year veteran punter Josh Miller on Thursday, leaving the team with two punters in camp, neither of whom has appeared in a regular-season NFL game. The 37-year-old Miller played his first eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before signing a free agent contract with the Patriots in March 2004.

Mark DeRosa’s bump-up in the batting order gave the Chicago Cubs the lift they needed during a rough stretch. DeRosa went 5-for-5 with four RBIs, the Cubs had a season-high 20 hits and Chicago scored seven in the seventh Thursday to beat the Cincinnati Reds 12-4. DeRosa’s five hits — four singles and a double — were a career high as the Cubs won for just the fifth time in 15 games this month.
The way thing are going for the Milwaukee Brewers right now, even Yadier Molina is a power hitter against them. Molina hit two home runs and the Cardinals beat the Brewers 8-0 on Thursday, completing a three-game sweep and closing to within 2 1/2 games of the NL Central lead for the first time since April 20.
New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese hasn’t talked to holdout defensive end Michael Strahan in a while and has no clue when the seven-time Pro Bowl player will make a decision on whether to retire. “We would like for him to be here if he’s going to be here, just for him to get some work,” Reese said Thursday at training camp at the University at Albany.
Roger Goodell wants to talk football. Michael Vick keeps getting in the way. The NFL commissioner, making a tour of training camps, raved about Detroit Lions coach Rod Marinelli and his players after visiting them Thursday. He spoke to them mostly about their responsibilities as players. As soon as Goodell started taking questions during a news conference, however, he was asked about Vick.
