The Minnesota Twins had just ended Erik Bedard’s nine-game winning streak and completed a season’s sweep of the Baltimore Orioles. While the hip-hop music resonated throughout the clubhouse, the Twins simultaneously celebrated their accomplishment and looked ahead to another challenge. Next up for resurgent Minnesota: an important three-game series in Cleveland against the AL Central leaders.

Tom Shearn was living in a camper outside a minor-league ballpark — saving money as the season wound down — when he got the call he feared would never come. The Cincinnati Reds wanted him. Finally, somebody wanted him. Two days shy of his 30th birthday, after 11 seasons knocking around the minors and another recovering from elbow surgery, the right-hander got his chance — and a win, too.

The stadium lights dimmed while Kyle Boller’s throw was in mid-air. The pass was incomplete — just like the game. With more lightning on the way, officials decided enough was enough. Saturday night’s preseason game between the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins was halted with 11:38 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Redskins an abbreviated 13-7 win.
