Ryan Smyth had a goal and an assist and Joe Sakic added two assists Sunday, leading the Colorado Avalanche past the Minnesota Wild 3-1. The Wild are 0-2-1 since starting the season 7-0-1. The Avalanche improved to 5-0-0 at home. Peter Budaj had 29 saves for the Avalanche. Minnesota rookie Josh Harding, starting consecutive games for the first time, made 19 saves.

Brad Marchand relishes being the villain, especially in the city where he hoisted the Stanley Cup. The Bruins forward scored a hat trick in the third period, including the winning goal with under eight minutes left, and Boston beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-3 on Monday night. After tying the game on the power play 58 seconds into the third, Marchand stole the puck from Vancouver captain Henrik Sedin along the boards, stepped past Daniel Sedin and then deked through the legs of Alexander Edler before beating Canucks goalie Ryan Miller.
