Comrie powers Isles to sweep of Sabres

New York Islanders' Radek Martinek, right, of the Czech Republic, checks Buffalo Sabres' Brian Campbell during the third period of an NHL hockey game Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.

If the New York Islanders had Mike Comrie last spring, they might have put quite a scare into the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Buffalo Sabres. Comrie made the most of his first two games with the Islanders, scoring two goals for the second straight night and lifting New York to a 3-2 victory Saturday that completed a sweep of the season-opening, home-and-home series against Buffalo.

The NHL announced Monday that it will not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, refusing for the first time in 20 years to halt its season for three weeks so its stars can chase gold for their home countries. The NHL had allowed its players to participate in the past five Olympics dating to 1998, giving the Winter Games pro-level star power akin to the NBA players who participate in the Summer Olympics.
