Capitals beat Isles 2-1 to stay perfect

New York Islanders Josef Vasicek (63) moves the puck around Washington Capitals Tomas Fleischman (43) during the first period of their hockey game, Monday, Oct. 8, 2007 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.

Olie Kolzig did what he usually does to the New York Islanders. For the Washington Capitals, that is simply perfect. Kolzig stopped 30 shots against his favorite opponent and carried the Capitals to a 2-1 comeback victory over the Islanders on Monday to keep Washington undefeated. The Capitals improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season despite being outshot 31-12.

Stuck in last place in the Eastern Conference, the New York Islanders fired coach Jack Capuano on Tuesday, ending one of the longest tenures in the NHL. General manager Garth Snow named assistant GM/coach Doug Weight as Capuano’s interim replacement in the hopes that a new voice could provide a spark for his struggling team. The Islanders are 17-17-8 and their 42 points are the fewest in the East, leading to Snow making the move for the short and long term.
