The Detroit Red Wings started fast and didn’t let up. Valtteri Filppula scored his first goal of the season and also had an assist, and Tomas Holmstrom added a goal and an assist in Detroit’s 5-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday night. Henrik Zetterberg scored and has a point in all 11 games this season, and Andreas Lilja and Kirk Maltby also scored in Detroit’s fourth straight victory.
Dan Ellis stopped 20 shots for his first career shutout, helping the Nashville Predators snap a six-game losing streak and beat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-0 Thursday night. Jordin Tootoo and Jerred Smithson scored for Nashville, which was one more loss from tying a franchise record. It was Ellis’ second NHL start, and first this season after Chris Mason got the first eight for Nashville.
