Erik Cole scored with 47.2 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals on Sunday in the preseason opener for both teams. Cole’s second goal of the game came with the Hurricanes holding a two-man advantage. Eric Staal’s shot from the slot tipped off Cole’s stick and sailed past goalie Michal Neuvirth.

Eric Perrin scored twice to lead the Atlanta Thrashers to a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday night in the preseason opener for both teams. The Blues’ top offseason acquisition, free-agent forward Paul Kariya, got off to a good start by scoring St. Louis’ only goal.
