Creighton point guard and national assists leader Maurice Watson Jr. will miss the rest of the season because of a major knee injury, a huge blow for a team that is off to its best start and has hopes of making a deep postseason run. An MRI revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Watson’s left knee. The senior was injured in the seventh-ranked Bluejays’ 72-67 win at Xavier on Monday.

Williams became the ninth Division I coach to reach 800 wins with the ninth-ranked Tar Heels’ 85-68 victory against Syracuse on Monday night, keeping them near the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.

Watson went to the bench with an injured left knee in the first half, and the Bluejays wasted an 11-point lead before rallying for a 72-67 victory over Xavier on Monday, extending the best start in Creighton’s history.
