When there’s a runner on second base, it’s up to the catcher and pitcher to mask the signs so the batter doesn’t get tipped off. Cubs shortstop Javier Baez didn’t want to leave anything to chance. With D.J. LeMahieu on second base in the third inning, Baez made the effort to stay in front of LeMahieu and block him throughout the leadoff. Then, he’d retreat back to his position at short before the pitch was delivered. Baez was convinced that LeMahieu was trying to steal signs. The entire exercise seemed pointless since LeMahieu is four inches taller than Baez. As the broadcast pointed out, LeMahieu’s view of the catcher wasn’t really blocked.
