Warriors Expected To Keep Core Together For At Least One More Season

The Golden State Warriors face an uncertain offseason with the departure of Bob Myers and the looming second luxury tax apron that creates a more punitive system for teams with payrolls as high as theirs.

But the Warriors appear committed to maximizing the title window around Stephen Curry and are expected to remain as competitive as possible.

“I think the most likely scenario is that the Warriors keep most of this together for at least one more season,” writes Tim Kawakami at The Athletic. “That’s what Curry wants. His opinion sort of matters.”

If the Warriors were to cut payroll, Jordan Poole has become the obvious candidate. The Warriors, however, are not prepared to simply salary dump Poole and would want a trade that would make sense for basketball reasons.

“I don’t think the Warriors would have to do a straight money dump if they want to move Poole,” writes Kawakami.

Jonathan Kuminga Prepared To ‘Bet On Himself’ In Hopes Of Max ContractJonathan Kuminga Prepared To ‘Bet On Himself’ In Hopes Of Max Contract

Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors appear unlikely to agree to a contract extension ahead of the Monday, October 21 deadline. Kuminga, who is represented by agent Aaron Turner, is believed to be comfortable becoming a restricted free agent in 2025.

“I’m told both sides are still far apart in extension conversations between now and Monday,” said Shams Charania on NBA Today about the Kuminga negotiations. “I think there’s a belief that this could play out into the season and into restricted free agent. And really a guy in Jonathan Kuminga that wants to bet on himself and try to be as close to a max contract type of player out there. The Warriors need him to step up and need him to become that superstar player. They also want to see how he potentially looks this season.”

Kuminga appeared in 74 games last season, averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 26.3 minutes. Kuminga was the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft out of the G League Ignite.

Over the past six years, Utah invested four lottery picks into backcourt talent. The need was real. The Jazz had already set its foundation in the frontcourt, even if that foundation morphed from Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap to Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert. Those draft picks, however, never panned
