Team USA Qualifies For 2023 FIBA World Cup

Qualifying for the FIBA World Cup is often a thankless task. It’s generally done without NBA players or NBA coaches leading the way. Done outside of that spotlight, it’s up to G League players and fill-in coaches to get Team USA on the big summer stage.

The United States pulled off a come-from-behind victory in Uruguay on Thursday to qualify for this summer’s FIBA World Cup. Team USA was led by NBA veteran Langston Galloway with 21 points, while former LA Clipper Xavier Moon added 17 points and six assists.

Steve Kerr and a team full of NBA stars will now take over for Jim Boylen and the G Leaguers for the World Cup in the Philippines in late-August. That tournament will see Team USA looking for a record sixth World Cup title, as well as serving as a means of qualification for the 2024 Olympics.

Damian Lillard has “essentially” been shut down for the remainder of the season. While Lillard is dealing with a calf injury, the reality of Portland falling out of the Play-In spot is the reason for the decision.

The Blazers have a lottery-protected first round pick that they will retain.

Portland could also entertain the idea of trading Lillard.

“You now have to wonder if Lillard ever steps on the court again for Portland,” writes Shams Charania at The Athletic.

Lillard is due $216 million over the next four seasons and has privately considered the possibility of a trade even though his public statements have demonstrated a desire to win with the Blazers.

“I expect there to be serious conversations about what’s next for both sides,” adds Charania.
