Derrick Rose Announces RetirementDerrick Rose Announces Retirement

In a post on Instagram, Derrick Rose announced his retirement. Rose played 16 seasons in the NBA and recently gave up his full salary for 2024-25 in a buyout from the Memphis Grizzlies.

Rose wrote lovingly about the game of basketball and all it gave him throughout his life in his retirement announcement. The 2011 NBA MVP also told several media outlets that it was time for him to give his all to his family.

Rose was drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the first overall pick at the 2008 NBA Draft. Three years later, Rose was named the NBA MVP. In Game 1 of the Bulls first-round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers in 2012, Rose tore his ACL. He’d miss the entirety of the 2012-13 season before returning for the start of the 2013-14 season. Unfortunately, Rose would play just 10 games before tearing his right meniscus.

Rose went on to play for the New York Knicks (over two different stints), Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies. He appeared set for a 17th NBA season before asking for and receiving his release from the Grizzlies.
