JJ Redick Will Formally Interview With Lakers, Considered Favorite For Job

JJ Redick will meet with the Los Angeles Lakers this weekend, which will be his first formal interview for the open head coaching job.

Redick is expected to be the favorite to be hired.

Should the NBA Finals advance to a Game 5, that game won’t be played until Monday, giving Redick the weekend to meet with the Lakers.

Rob Pelinka and Redick have stayed connected throughout the process. Redick is likely to have an all-day session with Pelinka and Jeanie Buss. He’ll be given the opportunity to prove that he should lead the Lakers, with player development expected to be a key focus.

The Lakers previously offered their head coaching job to Dan Hurley, who ultimately decided to to remain at Connecticut.

NBA gives teams, players more detailed schedule for restartNBA gives teams, players more detailed schedule for restart

The NBA gave teams a more definitive timetable for the restart to the pandemic-interrupted season Friday, including required coronavirus testing that is set to begin this month and mandatory individual workouts in early July before training camps. The league is still working on completing the health and safety protocols that will essentially become the rulebook for the restart at the Disney campus near Orlando, Florida – and told teams that talks with the National Basketball Players Association on those issues are continuing. Meanwhile, a person with direct knowledge of the talks said that Disney workers who will be on the campus during the NBA restart will have to follow a long list of protocols – including constant mask or other appropriate personal protective equipment usage when in the vicinity of any NBA participants or others there for the restart, strict social distancing guidelines and a submission to daily temperature checks and symptom self-assessments.

Rockets Switched To Rookie Extensions When Donovan Mitchell, Derrick White ExtendedRockets Switched To Rookie Extensions When Donovan Mitchell, Derrick White Extended

The Houston Rockets had a plan to be a player with cap space in the summer of 2025. When guard Donovan Mitchell and Derrick White signed extensions with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics respectively, the Rockets changed gears. Mitchell and White are favorites of Houston head coach Ime Udoka and the team could have pursued either player in 2025 free agency.

With the veteran guards off the board, Houston decided to extend Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun on rookie scale extensions instead of creating cap space next offseason. Now, the Rockets GM Rafael Stone may use Green, who will make just over $33 million in Year 1 of his extension (with a 10% trade bonus), as a trade piece next offseason.

Houston was linked to Kevin Durant last summer, and acquired some of the Phoenix Suns own draft picks in a deal with the Brooklyn Nets. The Rockets could use those picks, Green and other players in an offer for Durant, should the veteran superstar become available.
