Christopher Bell passed Joey Logano for the lead with two laps to go Sunday and then drove away for the victory in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 NASCAR Cup Series race on the infield road course at Daytona International Speedway. The win marked the first Cup Series win for Bell, who was on newer tires than Logano at the end. The Joe Gibbs Racing was making his 38th Cup start, and according to Nascar.com, he became just the 15th Cup Series driver to capture his first win on a road course.
Carl Edwards listed reason after reason for stepping away from full-time NASCAR competition this season, less than two months removed from nearly winning his first Cup title. Edwards, one of NASCAR’s top stars and driver for a top organization, really seemed at peace with a personal decision he made right before Christmas. Edwards had one year remaining on his contract with Joe Gibbs Racing, and he came 10 laps away from winning his first Cup title two months ago.
Josef Newgarden took fresh tires during the final caution and they paid off as Newgarden passed Robert Wickens with three laps remaining for the win at ISM Raceway outside of Phoenix. It was Newgarden’s eighth career win.
