Weaver bests Halladay, Angels keep lead

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Francisco Rodriguez celebrates the Angels' 3-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in a baseball game in Anaheim, Calif., Friday, Aug. 24, 2007.

Jered Weaver didn’t pitch as long as Roy Halladay did — just better. Weaver threw six scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Angels got RBI singles from Vladimir Guerrero, Maicer Izturis and Orlando Cabrera to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 Friday night. “It kind of raises your level of intensity going up against a guy like that,” Weaver said.

Rick Ankiel says he drank vodka before his first two starts in 2001 to quell anxiety after throwing five wild pitches in one inning during the previous season’s playoffs. Ankiel had a promising rookie season as a 20-year-old with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2000, but he lost his control in the postseason. Ankiel pitched five innings and got the win against Arizona.
