Max (11 K’s, go-ahead hit) magnificent for Nats

Washington right-hander Max Scherzer still has not lost to the team that brought him to the Major Leagues 10 years ago, and it was easy to see why Friday night. Scherzer retired the final 15 batters he faced after David Peralta’s leadoff homer in the third inning, while going seven innings for his Major League-leading seventh victory as the Nationals won for the 11th time in 13 games, 3-1, over Arizona at Chase Field. Scherzer also leads the Majors with 91 strikeouts. Scherzer doubled in a run to break a tie in the fourth inning, Trea Turner hit his seventh career leadoff homer in the first and Anthony Rendon homered in the eighth.

Boston Red Sox's Alex Cora dives but cannot catch Los Angeles Angels' Jeff Mathis (5), who was safe at second base on a double to left field in the fourth inning of a baseball game Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, in Boston. The Red Sox won 10-5.

David Ortiz’s left shoulder hurts so badly sometimes that taking another swing seems too painful. The Red Sox are happy he gave it another shot — and put a hurting on the Angels instead. Ortiz hit a grand slam deep into the right field seats in a six-run fifth inning that carried Boston to a 10-5 win over Los Angeles on Saturday night in a matchup of teams with the two best records in baseball.
