Astros fire manager Garner, GM PurpuraAstros fire manager Garner, GM Purpura

Houston Astros owner, Drayton McLane appears pensive during a news conference at Minute Maid Park, where he announced that the club had replaced manager Phil Garner, and General Manager Tim Purpura on Monday, Aug. 27, 2007. They were replaced by Astros bench coach Cecil Cooper, as interim manager, and Astros President of Baseball Operations, Tal Smith, was made the interim General Manager.

This is not the way Craig Biggio wanted his final season to end. Still, when manager Phil Garner and general manager Tim Purpura were fired, it pretty much told the story of what has happened to the Houston Astros. Owner Drayton McLane fired Garner and Purpura on Monday, saying the franchise “needed a fresh start” after a plunge to the bottom of the NL Central.
