Boras: A-Rod will opt out of contract

FILE ** New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez tosses his bat in the air after hitting a two-out, walk-off, three-run home run in the Yankees 8-6 win over the Cleveland Indians in their baseball game at Yankee Stadium in New York in this April 19, 2007, file photo. Rodriguez opted out of his US$252 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 in what appears to be the end of his career with New York.

Alex Rodriguez and agent Scott Boras picked quite a time for their big announcement. Smack in the middle of Game 4 of the World Series, Boras ended months of speculation and said A-Rod is opting out of the final three seasons of his contract with the New York Yankees. Oh, and Boras let the Yankees know by leaving a voice mail for general manager Brian Cashman.

Once upon a time, this game was a pitchers’ duel, before the Astros scored 6 in the 8th, the Indians countered with 5 in the 9th and Greg Allen won it with a solo homer in the 14th. Evan Gattis’ 3-run homer was the big blow in Houston’s 8th inning, while Michael Brantley’s RBI single completed Cleveland’s improbable comeback in the 9th, which was started by Jose Ramirez doubling to end a 17-pitch AB. Gattis and Yonder Alonso traded solo shots in the 13th. Jose Altuve got hits in his first 4 PAs to make it 10 straight, breaking his own club record. Starters and rivals Trevor Bauer (7 1/3 IP, 13 K’s) and Gerrit Cole (7 IP, 8 K’s) were both good before turning the game over to the bullpens.
