Angels clinch tie for AL West title

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia is congratulated by players Justin Speier and Juan Rivera after defeating the Seattle Mariners 9-5 during a baseball game Thursday, Sep. 20, 2007, in Anaheim, Calif.

After the Los Angeles Angels moved to the brink of their third AL West title in four years, their clubhouse wasn’t exactly giddy. They were steamed over star Vladimir Guerrero’s having to duck two fastballs thrown near his head by Seattle reliever Jorge Campillo, the second one causing a huge scrum at the mound during Thursday night’s 9-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Torre done with Yankees, rejects pay cutTorre done with Yankees, rejects pay cut

New York Yankees team owner George Steinbrenner, left, and manager Joe Torre get emotional after being presented with the trophy after the Yankees swept the San Diego Padres to win the World Series at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif., in this Oct. 21, 1998, file photo. Torre walked away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, turning down a $5 million, one-year contract, $2.5 million less than he made this season, when the Yankees failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs for the third-straight year.

After all he had accomplished — four World Series titles, 12 straight years in the playoffs, almost certain entry into the Hall of Fame — and after all the indignities, this was one Joe Torre wasn’t going to stand for. He wasn’t going to take a pay cut from the New York Yankees, no matter that he still would have been the highest-paid manager in baseball, and he certainly wasn’t going to prove…

Mets lose 4th straight, 12-4 to NatsMets lose 4th straight, 12-4 to Nats

New York Mets' Jose Reyes sits in the infield dirt after a throwing error by Mets catcher Ramon Castro allowed Washington Nationals' Nook Logan to steal second and advance to third in the seventh inning of a baseball game at RFK Stadium, Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 in Washington. The Mets lost 12-4.

Shortly after his New York Mets finished yet another dismal defeat, filled with shoddy fielding and poor pitching, general manager Omar Minaya strolled into the clubhouse to offer pats on the shoulder and encouraging smiles. Moments later Monday night, Mets manager Willie Randolph put a similar message into words: “I’m not angry.” So there’s the strategy, in the face of four consecutive losses and…
