Twilight Payment wins spectator-free Melbourne Cup

Oprah Winney rolled to an easy win Sunday in the $104,700 Schenectady Handicap at Belmont Park in her final tuneup before the Breeders’ Cup. Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. has targeted the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on Oct. 26 at Monmouth Park as the next start for the 4-year-old. “This race served its purpose,” Dutrow said.

The third Future Wager pool for this year’s Kentucky Derby and the only pool for the Kentucky Oaks will be open March 6-8. As usual, the mutuel field is the favorite at 9-2 with Tiz The Law next at 8-1. For the Oaks, the field is the favorite at 6-1 with Venetian Harbor next at 8-1.
