Superstar mare Enable retired after stellar career

With the Breeders’ Cup at Monmouth Park next month, the New Jersey Racing Commission on Wednesday passed new regulations that will allow pre-race testing on thoroughbreds for performance-enhancing agents. The commission approved out of competition testing for EPO (Epogen) and TCO2 testing on thoroughbreds competing at the four state racetracks.

Cane Pace winner Always a Virgin won the first of two eliminations for the $805,480 Messenger Stakes at Yonkers Raceway on Saturday night. Always a Virgin, driven by Brian Sears, ran the mile in 1:53.1 and earned $40,000 while advancing to next Saturday’s eight-horse final. Hot Rod Mindle, with David Miller, came up the passing lane to edge Tivoli Hanover to capture the second trail at 1:54.0.

Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park, favorite Oh Well did not disappoint in the Mohawk Million, winning over Silly Me Hanover and Proud To Be Lindy. Also on the card, Stockade Seelster won the Metro Pace, Slay won the Canadian Trotting Classic, Sylvia Hanover won the She’s A Great Lady, and Raised by Lindy won the Elegantimage Stakes.
