Saturday at Santa Anita, Gormley got up to win the Santa Anita Derby (G1) by a half length over Battle of Midway and Royal Mo with favorite Iliad finishing fifth. Also on the card, Paradise Woods won the Santa Anita Oaks (G1), Sircat Sally won the Providencia Stakes (G3), Hillhouse High won the Royal Heroine Stakes (G2), S Y Sky won the Evening Jewel Stakes, and Mr. Hinx won the Echo Eddie Stakes. Irish Smoke blew past the field and remained unbeaten with a victory in the $250,000 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Sunday. While More Happy led through a fast early pace, Irish Smoke benefited from a patient ride from Julien Leparoux. The 2-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken kicked clear of the field and went on to win by 3 lengths for West Point Stables and trainer Patrick Biancone.
