Since the great Michael Scudamore won the grueling steeplechase aboard Oxo in 1959, victory has eluded distinguished names lower down the family tree. Peter’s son, Tom, has had 15 tries as a jockey, failed to finish eight times and had a highest placing of eighth.

Any Given Saturday continued on the road to the Breeders’ Cup Classic with a victory Saturday in the $154,200 Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park. The 3-year-old will be one of the top contenders in the $5 million Classic on Oct. 27 at Monmouth Park. Any Given Saturday hit the starting gate at the break and absorbed an early bump before settling into stride.
