Saturday at Gulfstream Park, White Abarrio drew away to win the 2022 Florida Derby (G1) by 1 1/4 lengths over Charge It with favorite Simplification third. Also on the card, Kathleen O won the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), Family Way won the Orchid Stakes (G3), Main Event won the Cutler Bay Stakes, Fearless won the Ghostzapper Stakes (G3), Gufo won the Pan American Stakes (G2), and Phantom Currency won the Appleton Stakes (G3). Dance Smartly, the first Canadian-bred horse to win the Breeders’ Cup in 1991, has died after sustaining an injury in her paddock. She was 19. Dance Smartly, who won the Eclipse Award as North America’s top 3-year-old in 1991, was euthanized over the weekend because of an irreparable injury related to an arthritic joint in her knee.

There were four Breeders’ Cup races on Friday at Del Mar headlined by the Distaff (G1) where Forever Unbridled held off Abel Tasman to win by a half length. Also on the card, Rushing Fall won the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), Battle of Midway won the Dirt Mile (G1), and Mendelssohn won the Juvenile Turf (G1).
