El Areeb takes first step toward Kentucky Derby

The Green Monkey sure didn’t look like a $16 million horse in his greatly anticipated debut at Belmont Park on Saturday. The most expensive horse purchased at auction started slowly and never mounted a serious threat, finishing third in a six-furlong maiden special weight several races before Rags to Riches ran in the Gazelle Stakes.

Lahudood found an opening in the lane and squeezed through for the upset Saturday in the $600,000 Flower Bowl Invitational for fillies and mares at Belmont Park. Lahudood had the rail in the 1-mile race on the turf and jockey Alan Garcia never vacated the fence.
