Wyndham Championship Round 4 updates: FedExCup standings, Wyndham Rewards, Aon Risk Reward Challenge

SYDNEY, Australia – There are probably plenty out there wondering why is Jordan Spieth in Australia this week instead of enjoying a Thanksgiving feast in Texas. Why would a player of his stature fly halfway around the world to play in the Australian Open – an event with a fraction of the purse he usually plays for? And why would he do it for now a fourth year in a row? The first time, Spieth was convinced by his Australian-born swing coach Cameron McCormick (who will caddie for him this week) to check out the wonders of down under. Those who had won the Stonehaven Cup before also helped sway the young Texan who has a keen sense of golf history. Any tournament that boasts Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Peter Thomson, Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy among countless others as victors is certainly worth adding your name to. From there, a love affair has grown, and while Spieth was always destined for greatness, the former FedExCup champion and three-time major winner has always attributed Australia for helping to shape his stratospheric rise in golf. Over the past three years, Spieth has finished 1-2-1 in the event and is once again the tournament favorite. In 2014, Spieth headed to The Australian Golf Club as a one-time PGA TOUR winner who was starting to get a reputation as a non-closer. He’d come off a season with eight top-10s on TOUR but zero victories. His lone win, the 2013 John Deere Classic, had been helped out by a holed bunker shot that, quite frankly, was lucky to go in and not shoot through towards a potential watery grave. It had some questioning him. Questions Spieth didn’t like, but questions he took and answered astutely. And then he put together a ridiculously sublime final-round 8-under 63 at in brutally tough conditions to obliterate the field and win by six shots. A week later he won the Hero World Challenge. A few months after, the Valspar Championship. Then the Masters and U.S. Open on the way to a five-win season. In the lead up to what would be his first major win at Augusta National, Spieth said this: “The Australian Open may have been the most important tournament that I’ve ever played in because at the time, it had been maybe a year and a half since winning the John Deere in that playoff where I kind of squeaked in, luckily. “Going there to an elite field with the world No.1 player (Rory McIlroy at the time) and obviously with the local favorite Adam (Scott) and with a venue like The Australian, to put myself in a position and just have a level of patience that I had not had when I was in contention prior to that was important.â€� He had realized he was trying too hard during the Regular Season. With the chatter getting louder about his abilities, he was wanting it too much and when things started to slide, he couldn’t arrest it. “But in Australia, we didn’t let anything get to us; the roars in front, the scoreboard changes, and I shot arguably the best round I’ve ever played when tied for the lead,â€� he added. “It was a huge, huge boost for me and it allowed me to close the tournament, close it the right way and feel comfortable with the lead when I had it the next week and since then.â€� In fact, he’s now won nine of the last 10 times he’s held the 54-hole lead on the PGA TOUR, with the only hiccup being his infamous 2016 Sunday crash at Augusta. Funnily enough, it was the bombardment of questioning he faced after that victory that led him to one of the most historic finishes of all time earlier this year at The Open. With his round and tournament slipping away after a wild tee shot on the 13th hole led to a dramatic drop and ultimately a bogey, Spieth went back to his bank. He thought a little of winning in Australia. He thought more of losing in Augusta. “You can’t help but have your mind wander,â€� Spieth said this week. “How is this going to affect the next year? Am I going to be questioned about this and my ability to close in big events again, even though I shouldn’t have been questioned in the first placed by a couple of bad swings -  I felt that. “That comes into play in my mind, and I was almost just so angry at the way that year went after that Masters – the constant questioning even though I had a pretty successful season – that I just refused to go through it again. “I’m going to do everything in my will power, don’t care about how I’m hitting it, how I’m putting it, just do not allow yourself to lose this event and I was able to pull off the shots necessary.â€� Those shots saw him finish birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, par to win by three. With the Presidents Cup in 2019 slated for Australia, the likelihood is the Australian Open will take the slot the week before. As such, the chances of some of the biggest stars in golf playing it along with Spieth, are very high. “I would certainly encourage players to come play next year and right before in ’19 when we’re over here,â€� Spieth advocates. “It can only help in my mind and they’re going to love it. The guys still talk about the last President’s Cup in Melbourne, the veterans, just how great of a time it was.â€� But until they get down under to join him, Spieth will try to continue riding the momentum into the new season. For the first time in its 22-year history, the Barracuda Championship has a second home in the land of second homes. Situated about 17 miles west as the bald eagle flies from its aerie at Montrêux Golf & Country Club in Reno, Nevada, about 500 feet higher and across the state line into Truckee, California, Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood Course debuts as host of the final additional event of the 2019-20 PGA TOUR season. The Jack Nicklaus Signature design opened in 2004. It’s a par 71 with three par 5s and, even more interestingly, as many as three drivable par 4s. That’ll get the juices flowing given that the Modified Stableford scoring system is being used for the ninth consecutive edition of the tournament. Modified Stableford scoring meshes so well with his swashbuckling approach at golf and at life. • Nick Watney … Got off the schneid with a T12 and four sub-70s at the 3M Open. The Sacramento, California, native now gets to enjoy a virtual home game. It’s been a while, but he went for three top 10s at Montrêux. • Brandon Harkins … The former PGA TOUR member might have the most experience at Old Greenwood. He’s also gone 7-for-7 with three top 25s on the Korn Ferry Tour since its season restarted. • MJ Daffue … He’s not quite Patrick Reed or T.J. Vogel, but Daffue isn’t a slouch, either. He’s in the field on a sponsor exemption, but perhaps he should have declined it in favor of open qualifying. See, as noted by Ryan French in his recap of the open qualifiers for the Workday Charity Open, Daffue is 6-for-10 in the one-round races for a chip and a chair. In all six(!), he’s finished inside the top 30 in the tournament proper, including a T22 at the Workday. He’s built for the Modified Stableford scoring system, and vice versa. True to Nicklaus’ stamp on most properties, there’s room to move it off the tee on the 7,390-yard test, but there are strategic slots and spots from a handful that will separate seriously valuable drives from pedestrian fairway splitters. The entire course is blanketed with a blend of bentgrass and Poa annua not dissimilar to what many in the field experienced on most or all of a handful of recent sites where the PGA TOUR has set up shop. Of course, the big difference between locales such at TPC River Highlands, Detroit Golf Club and Muirfield Village is the altitude. At about 6,000 feet above sea level, conversions to compensate will be necessary to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Greens average 5,300 square feet, but Nicklaus-esque undulations will make them feel even smaller. Primary rough rising to three-and-a-half inches reinforces the goal to get the math right. Despite the customary challenge of the course, the overarching narrative concerning it and the week in general is to have a good time. It’s a resort community where countless locals are summering. With majestic vistas, clean and dry air, and nothing but sunshine all week with daytimes highs in the 80s, it’s golf for the soul ahead of an intense stretch of action on the horizon. Contributing to the thrill are par 4s measuring 357 yards, 345 yards and 396 yards at the eighth, 11th and 16th holes, respectively. However, with two of the par 5s and the shortest two par 3s on the front side, contenders in the final round probably will have built a foundation early in the day, and then take whatever they can coming home. Modified Stableford totals points (like a fantasy league), so positive numbers are good for the only time all season. The worst a golfer can score on any hole is minus-3 points for a double bogey (or worse). ShotLink is not used to measure performance. In addition to 300 FedExCup points and a two-year PGA TOUR membership exemption, the winner will qualify for next week’s PGA Championship. As of midday Tuesday, only nine golfers in the field are exempt into the major. Incidentally, fields for additional events entering this season were reduced to 120, but this week’s field was reset to 132 to help compensate for playing time missed due to the pandemic.
