Wrap-up: Bubba Watson defeats Kevin Kisner at Dell Technologies Match Play

AUSTIN, Texas — Bubba Watson made the final of the Dell Technologies Match Play look as though he were on vacation all along. Watson won his second World Golf Championships title Sunday with the biggest blowout since the championship matched switched to 18 holes in 2011, a 7-and-6 victory over Kevin Kisner. He picked up 550 FedExCup points to move to fourth in the standings.   Watson wasn’t as sharp as he was in the semifinals against Justin Thomas, whom he beat in 16 holes to deny Thomas going to No. 1 in the world ranking. He didn’t have to be in the final. If not for missing a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 sixth, Watson would have won the first seven holes. Kisner had a lot to do with that. After escaping in 19 holes against Alex Noren in his semifinal match, Kisner didn’t put up much of a fight. He made four straight bogeys and only twice on the front nine was putting for birdie. Watson had scheduled a family vacation out of the country on Sunday, which he had to postpone. Watson figured he hardly ever makes it this far in golf’s most fickle format, so it was a good problem to have. There was nothing fickle about his game, especially on the final day. Watson never trailed in the 28 holes he played Sunday, and he was never seriously threatened. The tougher match was against Thomas, the PGA champion who needed only to reach the championship match to replace Dustin Johnson at No. 1 in the world. Watson went out to a 3-up lead on the front nine, and when Thomas closed to 1-down at the turn with his first birdie putt, Watson won two of the next three holes to regain control. Thomas didn’t make another birdie until the par-5 16th, and by then it was too late. Watson made his birdie from 3 feet for a 3-and-2 victory. Thomas said he was too consumed with what was at stake in the semifinals. “I haven’t had such a hard time not thinking about something so much. And that really sucked,” Thomas said. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it, to be perfectly honest. And I think you’re constantly getting questions about it with the media. But I need to be mentally stronger than that, and understand that it’s just a match.” Noren beat Thomas in the consolation match, 5 and 3. One year after Watson disappeared from among the elite in golf, he has won his last two starts. He was No. 117 in the world when he arrived at Riviera, where he won for the third time in his career. With his 11th victory on the PGA TOUR, he now is back up to No. 21. And the two-time Masters champion added his name to the growing list of contenders at Augusta National. “I’m looking forward to it, and hopefully I can get this focus and my putter rolling like it is,” Watson said. Watson played 109 holes over seven matches, going to the 18th hole just once when he halved his match with Julian Suri on Friday. Through it all, he said he wasn’t committed to only four or five shots. He was hitting high draws, low cuts, all the shots he created as a kid in the Florida Panhandle when he was just a boy with a club and a wild imagination. He wouldn’t have imagined such an easy time against Kisner in the all-Georgia Bulldogs final that ended with the fabled “dog license” score in match play. A dog license in Britain used to cost seven shillings, six pence (referred to as 7 and 6). Watson holed a 10-foot birdie on the opening hole, and then Kisner took care of the rest. His drive was short and to the right on the hill at No. 2, and he did well to get it just short of the green, failing to get up-and-down. Kisner then hit just inside the hazard and had to play up short of another hazard. Then, he found a bunker on the par-3 fourth hole. His next drive went right into the trees on the reachable par-4 fifth. Watson missed his short birdie putt to win the sixth hole, but not to worry. Kisner’s next shot bounced off a spectator’s head and next to a fence, and he had to chip off loose soil across the green for another bogey. This can happen in match play, and Kisner saw it Saturday in his 8-and-6 victory over Ian Poulter. “I don’t know what was going on. It was just pitiful,” Kisner said. “I’ve just got to forget this 12 holes and get back to working on the things that got me here.” Even in a final match that lacked any drama, Watson still managed to shed a few tears. His mother was with him in the gallery on the weekend, and they shared a warm embrace after he made a 7-foot birdie putt on the 12th hole to win the match. “It’s crazy to think about it,” Watson said. “I’ve got two World Golf Championships, and two majors. It’s unbelievable to think about that, giving my mom a hug. Six years old, having one golf club for a year, no lessons. I can sit here and make up stories all day, but it’s absolutely remarkable that I’m able to life a trophy like this.” As for that vacation? Watson was cryptic as ever. “I’m going on vacation tomorrow, no matter if it’s at home or wherever it is, it’s vacation,” he said. “Golf clothes will not be seen until next Saturday.”

Emergency 9: Quicken Loans National, Round 3Emergency 9: Quicken Loans National, Round 3

Here are nine tidbits from the third round of the Quicken Loans National that gamers can use tomorrow, this weekend or down the road. TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm hosts for the second time and measures 7,107 yards (Par-70). Know Thy Enemy These were the top-10 selected golfers in the PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf game presented by SERVPRO. As the temperatures rose on Saturday the scoring continued to drop for the second day in a row. The course record set on Friday by Streelman was equaled by Abraham Ancer on Saturday. Ancer and Molinari both posted 197 (-13) and will be the last pairing off No. 1 tee Sunday afternoon. Neither has won on TOUR before and they are two shots clear of the field. Of the eight players within five shots only four have won on TOUR before but Woods isn’t out of it just yet as he’s six back. Round of the Week Part II Don’t wake him up! Abraham Ancer tied the course record today with eight birdies and a clean card. For the week he’s squared only two bogeys and has been playing lights-out. He’s second in SG: off the tee, third tee to green and first in scrambling. His putter isn’t holding him back either as he’s ninth in SG: putting. Since his career-best T8 at the Houston Open he’s MC in four of his last eight with his best payday cashing for T42. It’s a very big day for him tomorrow but living in Norman, Oklahoma, I know the heat won’t get to him! The Favorite The other half of the final pairing also has only made two bogeys all week but has a much deeper resume. Francesco Molinari hasn’t won on TOUR but he did beat an elite field last month as he won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on the European Tour. Molinari won’t be intimidated by Ancer or his excellent numbers tomorrow as the former Ryder Cup player is leading the field in SG: tee to green and GIR and is seventh in fairways. Winning the first one is always the toughest but he’s the favorite tomorrow The Tiger The hump is still there and it’s spectacular as Tiger Woods cannot find the magic on the back nine on Saturday. Out in 32 with five birdies and within two of the lead, the greatest of this generation couldn’t keep the momentum going. He came home in 36 with only one birdie and sits six back entering the final round. It’s not a hard case to crack as he hit six fairways and got up-and-down once in five tries. He’ll need one of those special rounds we haven’t seen yet if he’s going to crack the code Sunday. The Defending Champ Many of us (raises hand) have Kyle Stanley in multiple formats this week and it’s nice to see him bounce back with 67-66 after his opening round 71. He didn’t have his best stuff tee-to-green as he only hit seven fairways and just 10 GIR but he scrambled all of the eggs and made omelets to lead the field in SG: around the green. Chasing the Final Pairing Ryan Armour was the only player of the 36-hole triumvirate to hold it together in Round 3 and will begin Sunday in the second-to-last group with Zac Blair. Armour’s blue-collar 68 included four squares and six circles but he birdied three of his final six to join Blair just two back. … Blair is making his 13th start of the season and his best previous payday is T16 but that was last October. His best finish in 2018 was T36 at the Valero Texas Open, another demanding layout. He’s doing everything well this week and a podium finish will go a very long way to having full membership next year. Let’s see how he handles the pressure as his only podium on TOUR was the 2016 Sony Open. Moving Day Gamers who have been on the scent of Ryan Blaum over the last few weeks will be acutely aware of his 64 in Round 3. He’s up 35 spots to T10 as he looks to finish T18 or better for the fourth time in five tries. … Bronson Burgoon hasn’t had a top 10 in 16 previous events this season but his bogey-free 65 on moving day shot him up 26 spots to T10. … Former event champ Troy Merritt has buried his demons from his 66-82 MC in 2017 with a pair of 68’s to make the cut. His 66 in Round 3 moved him up 13 spots to T7. … Anirban Lahiri fired 65 last Saturday at TPC River Highlands. He signed for 65 this Saturday at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms and moved up 41 spots to T25, the biggest mover of the day. He’ll need another low one Sunday to match his T9 from last week. Moving Day: Wrong Way Gamers were inquiring why I didn’t address Billy Horschel yesterday. The simple is answer is I don’t have time and room for everyone. He dropped from T4 to T34 if you’re wondering how Round 3 went. … Kevin Streelman backed up his course record 62 with 67 in Round 3 and is sixth. J.J. Spaun backed up his course record 63 from Round 1 with 73-73 and is now T49. … Joaquin Niemann is uber-talented but his 74 dropped him 11 spots to T49. He’s still learning but doesn’t have far to go. That happens with youngsters! Study Hall The scoring average dipped to the lowest point of the week as Saturday’s 69.860 (-0.140) bested that of Round 1 69.992 (-0.008) and Round 2 69.908 (-0.092). … There’s no wind and the refrain from the players is the course is not as firm and baked out as last year. The 54-hole leader last year was David Lingmerth on 203 (-7). That was also Stanley’s winning score. Not this year! … First round co-leader Andrew Landry dusted himself off after a disappointing 72 in Round 2 with 65 in Round 3 and sits fifth. … C.T. Pan (67-67) broke his driver on No. 14 in Round 1 but the new piece in his bag didn’t hold him back in Round 2. His bogey-free 68 on Saturday was just one of three for the round joining Ancer and Burgoon. He’s currently T7.

Stewart Cink ready for ‘adversity’ with five-shot lead at RBC HeritageStewart Cink ready for ‘adversity’ with five-shot lead at RBC Heritage

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Gap. Lead. Cushion. Whatever you want to call it, Stewart Cink has it. He went into the weekend with a five-shot lead over Corey Conners, bogeyed the third hole just to remind everyone he’s human – it was his first bogey in 37 holes – and yet steadied himself for a 69 to reach 18 under. The lead? It’s still five. Cink will play in the final group with Collin Morikawa (67) on Sunday as he looks to become the only multiple winner this season besides FedExCup No. 1 Bryson DeChambeau. “I’ve been there before,” said Cink, 47, who is two for 12 at closing out 54-hole leads/co-leads on the PGA TOUR. “I’ve certainly been nervous and thrown up on myself and I’ve also played great in that situation. You know, I think it’s a lot better to embrace it and enjoy it and feel the tingle as opposed to trying to act like it’s not there.” Morikawa, who at world No. 4 is the highest ranked player in the field other than top-ranked Dustin Johnson (71, T36), an RBC ambassador, hopes to pressure Cink early Sunday. “Thankful to get three in a row and give myself at least somewhat of a shot come tomorrow,” said Morikawa, who birdied Nos. 13-15. “Yeah, I mean, it shows that there’s 62s, there’s 63s out on this golf course, I just have to go out there and find it. Each day I’ve shown little specks of good golf, I’ve just got to put it all together for tomorrow’s final round if I want a chance.” With a victory Cink, who won the season-opening event in Napa last September and is coming off a T12 at the Masters, is projected to move from 26th to third in the FedExCup standings. Will he win by five? Ten? Absent anyone from the chase pack going low, the main drama Saturday was the 4 o’clock flyover by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. What the leader is doing this week, this season, is plenty dreamy. He was 144th in the FedExCup and 300th in the Official World Golf Ranking after he missed the cut at the Wyndham Championship to close out last season. He started this season with his son, Reagan, on the bag, and shot 65-65 on the weekend to win in Napa right out of the gate. It was his seventh TOUR win but the first in over 11 years, since the 2009 Open Championship. This week he “cranked” (his word) his opening tee shot into the water but went unconscious in a good way after that, going 63-63 to take a huge lead. They were his third and fourth rounds of 63 or better this season. He had three such rounds the previous three seasons combined. “To shoot 8-under both rounds is incredible,” said Webb Simpson (64, T6). Cink could have extended his lead Saturday but was admittedly a fraction off with the putter. He missed his par try from just inside five feet at the third hole, and his birdie attempt from just inside four feet at the par-5 15th hole. He was -1.464 in Strokes Gained: Putting. Still, though, he “didn’t do a lot of damage” and wasn’t entirely disappointed. “I was a little bit tied up in the results,” he said, “and it’s something I can recognize and hopefully get better at tomorrow. But it’s natural; it happens to everybody.” Part of the Cink revival goes to the influence of his caddie, Reagan. This was never supposed to be a long-term arrangement, as Reagan was out of college and had secured a job with Delta Airlines. Why caddie? In the end, though, they were simply too potent a team to break up. “When you get on the golf course with Stewart and Reagan,” Simpson said, “they’re acting like player and caddie. They’re having fun, as usual, but I’m sure it’s been fun for Stewart to see Reagan kind of come into his own as a caddie.” Cink has won here, of course, but that was back in 2000 and ’04. The largest lead lost with 18 holes to play is six, a distinction held by seven players, most recently world No. 1 Dustin Johnson at the 2018 WGC-HSBC Champions. Nothing is given and nothing is a foregone conclusion on TOUR. “One of the things that we talked about before the round,” Cink said, “and I talked to (wife) Lisa about it, too, was expecting some adversity out there and being prepared for something like No. 3 where I missed a pretty easy putt, just a little left-to-righter, four feet, I think.” He will no doubt see more adversity Sunday but says he’ll play his game and not obsess over Morikawa or anyone else. He’ll look at where he stands as he heads into the last three holes, or perhaps as he considers what to do with his second shot at the par-5 15th hole. He’s looking forward to it.
