Woods ‘way better’ in advance of BMW Championship

MEDINAH, Ill. – Tiger Woods addressed the media after his pro-am round Wednesday and said he’s feeling ready to play in the BMW Championship at Medinah No. 3, the second week of the FedExCup Playoffs. After shooting an opening 75 at THE NORTHERN TRUST last week, Woods withdrew Friday with a mild oblique strain. He arrived at Medinah on Tuesday and took treatment, and with his pro-am partners on Wednesday he played nine holes and chipped and putted for nine more. “Oh, way better, yeah,â€ he said of his health compared to a week ago. “It was nice to take those days off, and I had to just let it calm down and get a bunch of treatment on it, and it feels so much better. I played nine today, played the front nine, and played well, which was nice to see, nice to feel. Took the back nine off, chipped and putted quite a bit, and it feels like – definitely doesn’t feel like it did on Friday, that’s for sure.â€ Woods is slated to play with Billy Horschel and C.T. Pan in the first round at 12:54 p.m. ET Thursday, and he has plenty to play for. At 38th in the FedExCup, he is projected to need no worse than an 11th-place finish to break into the top 30 and make it to the TOUR Championship. It was at East Lake that Woods notched his 80th victory a year ago. The win capped off a terrific comeback season for a player with a fused back whose career once seemed to be over. He landed his 81st victory at the Masters Tournament this past April, another epic win. Then reality hit. Admittedly worn out, Woods slowed down. He played less – just five starts since April – and his clubhead speed dipped. He fizzled at the PGA Championship at Bethpage (MC), and didn’t contend at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach (T21), despite having won on both courses. He missed cut at The Open Championship (opening-round 78) and WD’d at THE NORTHERN TRUST. The Windy City, though, is a Woods favorite. He won the 1999 and 2006 PGA Championships at Medinah, and five BMW Championships at nearby Cog Hill Golf & Country Club. “Yeah, I’m excited to be back in Chicago,â€ he said. “I mean, this is one of the places that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing over the years, and this was – going back to it, this is the area that I made my first cut on the PGA TOUR, a long time ago, and I’ve had some really good memories and some wins here that have been pretty memorable for me.â€ When he’s healthy, Woods is still a formidable player; he’s still ranked sixth in the world. He will captain the U.S. Team at the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne this December, but has not ruled out playing on that team. At 13th on the U.S. points list, he wouldn’t crack the top eight even with a win – the BMW is the last chance for players to work their way into the top eight in points for automatic inclusion – but he could make a case for himself as a pick. All of that, though, takes a back seat to his health. “Yeah, swinging,â€ he said, when asked if he knew what caused his latest injury. “As I’ve said before, the forces have got to go somewhere, and unfortunately when I make any kind of tweaks and changes to my swing, it’s like a new body part is aching. Unfortunately, I can’t play around the back like I used to, and unfortunately things flare up. “I tried to make tweaks all year,â€ he added, “trying to ease the stress off my back while I was still playing. Unfortunately, I haven’t really done a very good job of that, and when I have, I’ve hit the ball quite well. I was really excited about what I was doing at Liberty (National). I made some nice changes and obviously didn’t feel very well on Thursday.â€ Medinah was the longest course in major championship history in 1999 and is still brawny and difficult. It will play to a par 72 of 7,613 yards, with forced carries over water and juicy rough. “The golf course is a lot bigger,â€ Woods said. “It’s a lot longer than I remember.â€ Is that a concern? Perhaps. At the PGA at Bethpage Black, Woods couldn’t match the brawn of the golf course, making double bogey on his very first hole and never quite recovering. At the BMW at Medinah, where the rough is up, Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy are among those who have already predicted that the course will make similar demands of the world’s best. In other words, Woods’ improved feeling and range of motion will be tested. “Body-wise it’s the same,â€ he said. “If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Things just pop up. That’s been one of the biggest challenges coming back from last year. You saw I’m making tweaks and changes trying to play around this back and trying to be explosive and have enough rest time and training time. That’s been the biggest challenge of it all. “This week is no different,â€ he added. “I’m trying to win this tournament just like anybody else in this field and trying to get to East Lake and trying to get to a place where a lot of things changed for me last year, and hopefully I can make that happen.â€

Jordan Spieth Family Foundation gifts grants to First Tee - Greater Austin, Dell Children'sJordan Spieth Family Foundation gifts grants to First Tee - Greater Austin, Dell Children's

Jordan Spieth was born, raised and still resides in Dallas, Texas. It's home, the city where he met - and later married - Annie, his high school sweetheart. Some three hours and 200 miles south down I-35, though, there's another place that feels like home. The place where a proud Texas Longhorn was part of the 2012 NCAA Championship-winning men's golf team as a freshman. And, with this week's stop on the PGA TOUR in town - in Austin, for the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play - it was a time and place to leave a lasting impact on the community, too. Jordan, Annie and the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation (JSFF) shared that significant grants will be made to both the First Tee - Greater Austin and Dell Children's Foundation, the TOUR event's two primary beneficiaries. "Austin has and will continue to be a very special place to our family," Jordan Spieth said. "There is really great work being done there, and our (Jordan Spieth Family) Foundation is thrilled to have an impact in this city in 2021 through two amazing grant partners." First Tee - Greater Austin and Dell Children's are both in the heart of Austin, along with many other JSFF grantees that also support Austin-area families. These include the Huckleberry Foundation, Carson Leslie Foundation, Heroes for Children, Armed Services YMCA and Freedom Alliance. "The First Tee of Greater Austin has prioritized making golf accessible to all youth, regardless of background, experience or ability," Jordan Spieth said. "We are confident that with a proper learning center, their impact will only grow. "What excites us the most is that in addition to growing the game of junior golf, one of our foundation's mission pillars, this learning center will allow First Tee - Austin to offer ancillary support services such as tutoring, seminars, community events and more." Another of the foundation's pillars - pediatric cancer - was the focus of the grant to Dell Children's. "Dell Children's Foundation is such an important part of this community," Annie Spieth said. "The JSFF grant will support vital staff such as child life specialists and social workers, whose roles provide an extra layer of care for children and their families needed throughout their journey." The Jordan Spieth Family Foundation offers a platform for the Spieths to lend time, help grow awareness and offer financial support for four philanthropic areas. In addition to junior golf and pediatric cancer, the pillars include special needs and military families. In total, the foundation has 25 grant partners this year alone across the four pillars.

Quick look at The Honda ClassicQuick look at The Honda Classic

THE OVERVIEW No doubt some players actually enjoy playing the Bear Trap at PGA National’s Champion course. Defending Honda Classic champion Rickie Fowler even calls it fun. “It’s always a good stretch of golf holes,â€ he said. But most players would probably fall in the same camp as two-time Honda Classic champ Padraig Harrington. “I fear those holes,â€ he said. “There’s no doubt about that.â€ With good reason, of course, Hole Nos. 15, 16 and 17 are annually ranked among the toughest three-hole stretches on the PGA TOUR. In fact, in the last 10 years, those three holes have played to a cumulative stroke average of 0.644 above par, making it the fourth-hardest three-hole stretch of any non-major course on TOUR. (In case you were wondering about the most difficult, it’s holes 8, 9 and 10 at Pebble Beach.) It’s not that the Bear Trap is impossible to score on. A year ago, Fowler essentially sealed the deal on his four-shot victory by hitting his tee shot at the par-3 15th to 3 feet in the final round. The day before, he birdied the par-4 16th. And in the second round, he birdied both the 15th and 17th (another par 3). “Birdies happen in the Bear Trap,â€ Fowler said, “but other numbers do, as well.â€ Ask Jimmy Walker, who was looking to make a move late in the final round until his tee shots at 15 and 17 each found the water; it eventually cost him five strokes. Gary Woodland, meanwhile, was on his way to a solo second until his 3-putt at 17 (followed by a bogey at 18) dropped him into a tie. When you play the Bear Trap, you can probably expect to hit one ball in the water. Since 2007, 481 players have played at least one competitive round at PGA National – and 367 of them have hit at least one ball in the water. That’s a rate of 76 percent. Of those 114 players who have stayed dry, just 10 have played eight or more rounds at PGA National. Somehow, 2013 Honda Classic champ Michael Thompson has stayed dry the most, having played it 20 times without a water ball. So what the strategy for playing the Bear Trap? “First goal is not to hit in the water,â€ Harrington said. “Second goal is not to hit it in the bunkers. And then hopefully, you hit on the green between them. “But strategy, you’re just trying to hit the right shot at the right time. You’re trying to get as much information wind-wise. You’re preparing for those holes definitely in advance. When you’re standing on the 14th, you’re watching the players in front of you play 15. Have they gone long? Have they come up short? You’re getting an impression of those holes, very similar to the 17th at [TPC] Sawgrass. You’re always watching the groups ahead of you trying to get a feel.â€ It’s working for Harrington, who is 6 under in the 24 times he’s played the 15th. That’s the best score of any player since 2007. As for the overall leaders of Bear Trap scoring – that would be Russell Knox and Adam Hadwin, who are each 6 under in their careers in that stretch since 2007. Knox has played 14 rounds; Hadwin has played it six times. So far, they’ve each yet to parlay their success on the Bear Trap into a Honda Classic win. But maybe one day. After all, the inscription on the plaque welcoming golfers to the Bear Trap says it all: It should be won or lost right here. THREE PLAYERS TO PONDER Tiger Woods Good sign – he’s playing for the second consecutive week. Bad sign – he’s coming off a missed cut. Rickie Fowler Has played 22 worldwide events since his win here a year ago, with an impressive 15 top-15 finishes. Sergio Garcia Last year’s Masters champ is making his TOUR season debut this week. Next month he becomes a father. THE FLYOVER A look at the aforementioned Bear Trap – the 179-yard 15th, the 434-yard 16th and the 190-yard 17th. The Bear Trap accounts for 17 percent of all bogeys, 32 percent of all double bogeys and 35 percent of all triples or worse at the Champion Course. Since 2007, the field is a combined 2,973 over par on those three holes. WEATHER CHECK From PGA TOUR meteorologist Wade Stettner: “Partly cloudy skies and breezy conditions are forecast on Thursday and Friday with east winds at 15-25 mph. Winds will subside a little this weekend as they shift more towards the southeast. A 20 percent chance of showers will remain in the forecast each day as there may be a few passing showers from time to time. Temperatures will be above normal this week with highs in the lower 80s each day.â€ For the latest weather news from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, check out PGATOUR.COM’s Weather Hub. SOUND CHECK We know how challenging it is. If it doesn’t rain, it’s going to be a really, really challenging week, so you have to be very, very patient, even more than any other week. You know, that’s something that it’s a good challenge. I enjoy those kind of things. BY THE NUMBERS 60.67 – Percentage of putts made by the field from 5-10 feet last year at The Honda Classic. That was the highest percentage of any tournament in the 2016-17 season. 8.11 – Percentage of putts made outside of 20 feet by the field last year. That was the second-highest percentage of any TOUR event (TPC Summerlin led with 8.26 percent). 13 over – Rory McIroy’s cumulative score on the Bear Trap. For the other 15 holes, he’s 4 under. McIlroy won The Honda Classic in 2012. SCATTERSHOTS Tiger Woods has 79 PGA TOUR wins – and 16 of those have come in the state of Florida. It’s the most of any state he’s played in. Woods hasn’t played The Honda Classic that often; this will be his fifth start in the event, and his first since a WD in 2014. His best finish was a tie for second in 2012. Adam Scott is still searching for his first round in the 60s this season. Thus far, he’s played 15 rounds in four events and has not yet recorded a round in the 60s. Only Charl Schwartzel (16) has more rounds this season without reaching the 60s. This will be the last week to qualify for next week’s World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship. Players not previously eligible can qualify by being inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking or the top 10 in the FedExCup standings after this week.
