Wolff turns pro, joins Team Taylormade

Collegiate standout Matthew Wolff, who’s fresh off winning the 2019 NCAA men’s individual title by five shots, announced that he’s making his professional PGA TOUR debut at the 2019 Travelers Championship, and that he’ll be joining Team TaylorMade. After his six-win sophomore season at Oklahoma State University, 20-year-old Wolff’s decision to turn pro was a matter of when, not if. While he has what some would call an unorthodox golf swing, Wolff has proven he can compete on the PGA TOUR. He made the cut at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open as an amateur, finishing T50. His decision to sign with an equipment sponsor, however, was less certain. In today’s age of equipment, it’s no guarantee anymore that a player – even as highly touted as Wolff — will sign an equipment deal. Look at Brooks Koepka; after four major championship victories, he still remains an equipment free agent, certainly leaving huge sponsorship money on the table. Wolff, however, already played a bag full of TaylorMade golf clubs while at Oklahoma State University, so his decision to sign with that particular company is less surprising. TaylorMade has yet to comment on the signing, but based on the video posted to Wolff’s Twitter, it does seem that Wolff has signed a full equipment deal with TaylorMade. In addition to using TaylorMade clubs, Wolff is wearing a TaylorMade hat, he has a TaylorMade staff bag, and he’s hitting TaylorMade TP5x golf balls. At the 2019 NCAA Championships, Wolff used a TaylorMade M5 driver, an M5 fairway wood, P-750 irons, Milled Grind wedges and a Spider X putter. In the Twitter video, however, it seems Wolff may be testing between a TaylorMade M5 driver and an M6, since he is hitting both drivers in the video. It will be interesting to see if Wolff makes any changes to his NCAA-winning club setup when he makes his pro debut at the Travelers Championship later this month.

U.S. Open tee times: Rounds 1 & 2U.S. Open tee times: Rounds 1 & 2

The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced tee times for the first two rounds of the 2020 U.S. Open Championship, Thursday (Sept. 17) and Friday (Sept. 18), at 7,477-yard, par-70 Winged Foot Golf Club (West Course), in Mamaroneck, N.Y. The U.S. Open is a 72-hole, stroke-play competition. A field of 144 players will play 18 holes of stroke play on Sept. 17 and 18, after which the field will be reduced to the low 60 scores and ties. Those players making the cut will play 18 holes on Sept. 19 and 20. If there is a tie upon the completion of 72 holes, a two-hole aggregate playoff will immediately follow. If this playoff results in a tie, the tied players will immediately continue to play off hole-by-hole until the winner is determined. Team Max Homa, Kevin Kisner a popular pick ahead of QBE ShootoutTeam Max Homa, Kevin Kisner a popular pick ahead of QBE Shootout

The QBE Shootout, which will be held at Tiburón Golf Club’s Gold Course in Naples, Florida, gives golf betting an opportunity before the end of the calendar year. A unique event, with 24 players paired into 12 teams, with a field that includes past Presidents Cup players, major winners and two LPGA stars. It will feature a scramble format during the first round (Friday), a modified alternate shot format during the second round (Saturday), and a final-round Four-ball (Sunday). So, how are bettors approaching this tournament? As of Tuesday at the BetMGM online sportsbook, the team of Max Homa and Kevin Kisner is generating the most betting action by far. They have the most handle (30.2%) on the most tickets (21.7%). In terms of golf odds to win, they are +700, tied for fourth-best. Kisner and Homa are among the few teams in the field with both players having experience in a Presidents Cup. The two were part of the United States Team that defeated the International Team in the Presidents Cup this fall at Quail Hollow. Homa went a perfect 4-0, while Kisner was 0-2-1. Homa fans have had the opportunity to profit significantly over the last year or so. Had you placed a $100 wager on Homa to win in each of his 24 PGA TOUR starts last season, plus his three starts so far in this new 2022-23 campaign, you would have profited a cool $9,300. Harris English and Matt Kuchar also are a popular pick. They are drawing the second-most handle (15.3%) on the second-most tickets (13.6%). This pairing has had a ton of success at this event, winning in 2013, 2016 and 2020. Kuchar has earned the most money in the tournament’s history ($2,295,000), while English is third ($1,938,750). They have the second-best odds to win at +600.
