KAPALUA, Hawaii — Gary Woodland made a 65-foot eagle putt and finished with a birdie for a 5-under 68 to keep his three-shot lead in the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Saturday. Rory McIlroy briefly caught him for the lead until the birdies stopped falling. He shot 68 and starts the new year playing in the final group. They were tied late in the third round when McIlroy missed a good birdie chance on two par 5s at No. 15 and No. 18. In the group behind him, Woodland reached the front of the 15th green and watched his putt up the slope and into the grain drop for eagle, with the pin still in the hole. He holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the toughest pin position at the 18th — front and right — to end the day where he started. Woodland was at 17-under 202, and would love nothing better than to secure another trip to Kapalua in the first tournament of the year. Marc Leishman, who made a double bogey in the opening round and a triple bogey on Friday, limited the damage to only one bogey. He had a 68 and was well in range, four shots behind. Xander Schauffele (68) and Bryson DeChambeau (70) were five back. The only downer for Woodland was learning that his grandmother in Kansas had died Friday night. This is a family vacation for most of the Woodland crew — for Christmas, he flew out 11 relatives. “She’s been downhill for a little while now,” Woodland said. “It’s been tough. And you try to prepare for that, but you never really can. Definitely will have a little extra emotion with me, but we’ll get through it.” It was a tough day of work on the course, as the trade wind returned stronger than expected. McIlroy managed to get through it without a bogey. He had a close call on the 16th, when he tried to atone for the missed birdie on the previous hole by going at the flag and landing just over the green. He faced one of the fastest chips on the course, down the slope toward the Pacific horizon, and left it 12 short. He made his par to at least stay in range. McIlroy spoke earlier in the week about playing in the last group six times last year. One of those was the Masters, when he started two shots behind Patrick Reed and never challenged. Another was the TOUR Championship, where he was three behind Tiger Woods and didn’t give him much of a fight. “I probably pushed a little too hard, and it didn’t really work out for me,” McIlroy said. “I just have to go about my business. I didn’t make a bogey today, so I’ll make that a goal tomorrow.” It still will depend on Woodland, a three-time winner on the PGA TOUR who wants more victories to show for his improved all-around game. His only mistake on Saturday was coming up just short of the green on No. 12 and missing a 5-foot par putt. Woodland was part of a crowded leaderboard Friday when he pulled away with five straight birdies. This time, all he needed was one big putt. He laughed when it dropped, though he says it had nothing to do with surprise. “I just saw somebody’s face in the background. They weren’t too happy that the ball went in, so it made me laugh,” he said. “I enjoyed that.” The last two winners at Kapalua, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas, needed something special Sunday. Thomas shot a 70 and was seven behind, while Johnson had 69 and was eight back.

SAN DIEGO – Tiger Woods’ pro-am round for the Farmers Insurance Open confirmed the 14-time major champion’s reasons for optimism while simultaneously showing the distance he must traverse to win his 80th PGA TOUR title. He had his share of highlights, including approach shots knocked stiff at the first and final holes and a 25-foot eagle putt at the 17th hole, but also missed a frustrating amount of short putts and had a recovery shot bounce backward after striking a tree. Woods hit his driver hard and his irons high, but his final score of 2-under 70 on the shorter North Course seemed to be an accurate assessment of his day. He had several close approach shots, but didn’t consistently give himself birdie putts within 15 feet of the hole. Most of his misses were just off the fairway or green, though. Two tee shots – at Nos. 5 and 16 – were the only egregious misses. The latter was his sloppiest hole of the day. He was visibly frustrated as he walked to his ball after his failed attempt from the trees, rushing his pre-shot routine before hitting his ball on the green. The frustration shows that Woods still has a standard he expects to meet, even if it isn’t as high as it once was. Unlike the years when he was hampered by back pain, he isn’t content to just be able to swing the club. Even though he admitted that his expectations are tempered by the fact that he hasn’t played on TOUR in a year, Woods talked Wednesday about compiling a schedule that best prepares him for the Masters. The year’s first major is on his mind. The clubhead speed and confidence that make him optimistic about this comeback were on display Wednesday. So fresh is this start that it’s easy to forget that Woods played in this event last year, missing the cut with rounds of 76 and 72. His back already hurting, he lasted just one more round before shutting it down. There’s no pain this year. “I haven’t felt this good in years, so I’m excited about it,� Woods said. “I want to start feeling what it feels like to be out here and hit shots, grind out scores, and that’s something that I’ve been looking forward to.� This is just his second official PGA TOUR start since the 2015 Wyndham Championship. Success won’t be measured in a result this week, though. More important will be what happens 5, 10 or 15 starts from now. He hasn’t played more than 10 events since 2015, and his Player of the Year season of 2013 is the last time he made more than 15 starts. Woods would not elaborate on his upcoming schedule, though. The Genesis Open remains the only other tournament to which he has committed. Woods said he’s been playing golf six days per week, and that, unlike last year, he’s unencumbered by limits on how many holes he can play or balls he can hit. He’s still trying to learn how he can swing with the limited mobility that comes with a fused back. Woods no longer works with an instructor, choosing to experiment on his own. “I’d like to meet somebody who can swing it over 120 miles an hour with a fused back. Do you know anybody?� Woods asked rhetorically. “No one understands that, so I have to rely on my own feels and play around with what my body can and cannot do.� How he swung Wednesday, during what he termed a “hit and giggle� affair where entertaining his amateur partners was a priority along with learning a renovated North Course he’s played just once in competition, pales in importance to his performance Thursday, when he tees off at 10:40 a.m. with Charley Hoffman and Patrick Reed on the South Course. Woods is a seven-time champion of this event, and the winner of the 2008 U.S. Open here, but he hasn’t played on a Sunday at the South Course in five years. His victory at the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open was one of five wins that year. Torrey Pines has changed greatly since his first victory here, in 1999. He shot 22-under par that week. Three of the past four years, the Farmers Insurance Open has been won with a score that’s single-digits under par. Both courses have been renovated since Woods’ first win, and the rough was thick enough Wednesday to make searching for balls a struggle. “The greens are definitely very spring, and it’s going to be a challenge this week,� he said. “It’s going to be a little bit harder to make birdies than it has been in the past. It will be a great challenge.� How Woods handles it is of supreme interest this week, but success will be measured in a matter of months, not days.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Webb Simpson had just shot 64 and was packing his things in the parking lot when he and his caddie, Paul Tesori, were asked how TPC Southwind was playing. “Harder,” Simpson said. “Really windy,” Tesori added. Indeed, Sunday put the wind in Southwind. That wind, plus a slow-play warning, brought chaos to the conclusion of the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Harris English, who had looked in control after taking a two-shot lead into the back nine, hit tee shots into the water at the par-3 11th and 14th holes, double-bogeyed both, and suddenly there was a five-way tie at the top. He had one last gasp to save the tournament, but after dropping one more shot on 16 failed to birdie the 18th hole and walked away with a 3-over 73, one shot out of a playoff. “Yeah, we were warned on the front nine (to pick up the pace),” said English, who was trying to become the first three-time PGA TOUR winner this season (Sentry Tournament of Champions, Travelers Championship) and came into the week fifth in the FedExCup. “Kind of got behind, felt like we were running pretty much the whole round and never really caught up.” The final twosome was first warned on the fifth hole, English said. Bryson DeChambeau needing a ruling at the sixth didn’t help, and poor play by both players set them back even further. A left-to-right wind exacerbated anything that leaked right on 14, and a rushed English took his hand off the club as his tee shot never came close to finding land. It was the killing shot, allowing a handful of players back into the tournament and knocking English for a loop. “You definitely start the day in one rhythm and then you kind of get out of that having to walk faster, having to do everything a little faster because you don’t want to get a bad time,” he said. “It was tough, the wind was swirling obviously coming down the stretch, there was some very important shots in there and it was tough. But I’ve got to learn to slow down, go through my routine and not really worry about being put on the clock.” He missed a birdie try from just over 12 1/2 feet on 18. English was vying to surpass Collin Morikawa at FedExCup No. 1, and to be the third wire-to-wire to winner in this event after Tiger Woods (2000) and Stewart Cink (’04), both of whom accomplished the feat at Firestone South. Now he’ll move forward knowing that 63 really good holes were wiped out by a back-nine 40. “It’s just tough to rush like that,” he said. “We were getting warned on the front nine and it’s tough to catch up. I made double on 11, Bryson made triple, and you can’t catch up doing that. From 12 on I felt like we were running. “And it’s tough out there,” he continued. “The wind’s picking up. Obviously, there’s some really good pins out here. You’re trying to win a championship and it’s hard. I don’t really like speeding up like that or feeling like I’m rushed, but I’ve got to get better at that.”
