Wiesberger comes to life to lead Made in Denmark by 1 shot

Bernd Wiesberger bogeyed a third hole to finish the third round and still led the Made in Denmark event by a shot on Saturday. Seeking a fifth European Tour title, Wiesberger started the day at 5 under and climbed to 9 under after eight holes. Bogeys either side of the turn set him back, only for the Austrian to reel off three consecutive birdies on Nos.

Collin Morikawa's made cuts streak ends at 22 at the Travelers ChampionshipCollin Morikawa's made cuts streak ends at 22 at the Travelers Championship

Collin Morikawa is finally getting a weekend off. After making his first 22 consecutive cuts as a pro, the second longest streak in the last 30 years (Tiger Woods, 25), the high-flying Morikawa came back to earth and will miss the weekend rounds at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. RELATED: Full leaderboard After shooting an opening-round 72, Morikawa could only manage one better Friday, finishing at 3 over for the tournament and well off the projected cut. “It was bound to happen at some point,” he said. “Who knows when that was going to be. But now I guess we’re going to stop talking about it and I can go and just go on to next week.” Morikawa said he will take a week off, then pick back up again for the two tournaments at Muirfield Village in Columbus, Ohio. Just two weeks ago Morikawa lost a playoff to Daniel Berger at the Charles Schwab Challenge, the first tournament back after a three-month hiatus on the PGA TOUR due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He faltered slightly with a final-round 74 and a T64 finish at the RBC Heritage, which he said led to his struggles at the Travelers, where “I just couldn’t get the ball in the hole.” Morikawa, 23, graduated from Cal Berkeley (Business Administration) in the spring of 2019, turned pro, and took off like a rocket. He was runner-up to friend Matthew Wolff at the 3M Open, finished T4 at the John Deere Classic, and won the Barracuda Championship. Along with Wolff and Puerto Rico Open winner Viktor Hovland, who is in contention at the Travelers, Morikawa is a key cog in of one of the most celebrated rookie classes in decades. He was 20th in the FedExCup and had climbed to 29th in the world heading into the Travelers. “I’m going to learn a lot from this week,” he said. “I missed the cut as an am at the Safeway Open in 2016, and I learned more then, in those two days, than I did in a lot of my events so far as a pro. I’m going to learn a lot from this week and just move forward.”

James Driscoll’s sun-protection apparel at the Travelers ChampionshipJames Driscoll’s sun-protection apparel at the Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, Conn. – Monday qualifier James Driscoll is not taking any chances this week – specifically in protecting himself against the sun. The 40-year-old Boston native, making his first PGA TOUR start in 2-1/1 years, is not only wearing a long-sleeve shirt under his golf polo, he also wears a scarf that wraps around his face and covers his neck, along with a Byron Nelson-style Panama hat. It’s a different look from everybody else in the Travelers Championship field – especially this week as temperatures threatened to break 80 degrees on Friday — but nobody can argue about its effectiveness against the sun’s damaging rays. “Every dermatologist would recommend staying out of the sun as much as possible,â€ said Driscoll, who turned pro in 2001 and is making his 241st start on TOUR. “I just know everyone should protect themselves from the sun as much as possible.â€ To that end, Driscoll – who’s best TOUR finishes are two playoff losses in 2005 and 2009 — is working on launching his own golf clothing line that will specialize in long-sleeve apparel emphasizing sun protection. He expects to receive his first samples soon and would like to launch his line within the next year. “The last thing golf needs is another clothing company,â€ said Driscoll, who currently lives in Jupiter, Florida, and was a full-time Web.com Tour member last season. “But this is a long-sleeved golf shirt for the sun. … “I think the future is that people are going to be wearing a lot more coverage.â€ Asked what he thought of the long-sleeve button-down shirts that Phil Mickelson wore at THE PLAYERS Championship in May, Driscoll replied: “I like that it’s long sleeves and protects you from the sun. But it’s a little too formal for me. Mine’s a little bit more casual.â€ As for this week, Driscoll opened with a 4-under 66 and followed that Friday with a 2-over 72 that leaves him at 2 under, which had him sitting on the cut line when he signed his scorecard. Provided he makes the cut, he can credit a hole-out from the greenside bunker for birdie at the par-3 eighth, which was his next-to-last hole for the day. And as for what kind of reaction his apparel has received from the gallery, Driscoll – who began wearing a Mohawk a couple of years ago – just shrugged. “People think I’m a little weird anyway,â€ he said, “so I don’t think people are too surprised.â€

Bad weather guidelines adjustment: FedExCup Playoff eventsBad weather guidelines adjustment: FedExCup Playoff events

PGA TOUR STATEMENT Given the importance of the FedExCup Playoffs as the culmination of the season-long race for the FedExCup, and sequential nature of advancement from one event to the next based on competitive performance, the Commissioner has decided to modify the Bad Weather Guidelines as outlined in the PGA TOUR Tournament Regulations. The Commissioner has the authority to modify a Regulation if he deems it in the interest of the game of golf, the host organizations, the public or the players. As such, for THE NORTHERN TRUST, BMW Championship and TOUR Championship, play will be allowed to extend beyond Monday as is deemed necessary in order to complete 72 holes of competition, without regard to how much play is completed on Monday. This modification is consistent with the Tournament Regulation already in effect for THE PLAYERS Championship. Provided course conditions and the weather permit, the goal is to complete THE NORTHERN TRUST on Monday. As previously messaged, Round 4 tee times have been published for Monday with the first tee time on #1 and #10 at 7:30 am. Due to uncertainty with the forecast overnight, we will provide an update to players and caddies at 5:30 am.
