Tringale, Seiffert make rare back-to-back aces at Mayakoba Golf Classic

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Cameron Tringale and Chase Seiffert made it look easy once play started at the Mayakoba Golf Classic at El Camaleón Golf Club. Playing in the 8:10 a.m. group, Tringale aced the 112-yard, par-3 fourth hole. Playing in the 8:20 group right behind him, Chase Seiffert did the same thing. Related: Leaderboard | Tee times | Ancer aiming for Presidents Cup momentum “We were in the fairway and heard the applause and saw (Tringale) kind of high-fiving everyone,â€ Seiffert said. “I just tried to hit a 106 shot, downwind. It landed maybe a foot right of it and spun back into the pin. It’s kind of cool to go back-to-back there. Very rare.â€ Both players used a 56-degree wedge, and both were given large bottles of Patrón tequila for their efforts. “It was early, so there weren’t too many spectators,â€ said Tringale, who has made three aces overall, two on the PGA TOUR. “They cheered, threw their hands up. I wasn’t really paying attention to them. I was slapping fives with the guys in the group. (Fabián Gómez and K.H. Lee) “It looked good the whole way,” he added. “It landed about two inches short and went straight in.â€ Did he know Seiffert aced the hole right behind him? “I didn’t know ’til just now,â€ Tringale said after signing his scorecard (69). Aces in back-to-back groups is not unprecedented. Padraig Harrington and Kirk Triplett each made a hole-in-one at the 16th hole at the 2004 Masters Tournament Still, the odds are long even for the best in the world. When he got to the fourth green Friday morning, Seiffert (68) said, the few early-to-rise spectators were delighted to have seen his fourth hole-in-one overall and third in competition. “One of the ladies said, ‘We just saw another one go in the group before!’â€ he said. “It was kind of neat. “There may have been six or seven people around the green,â€ Seiffert added, “so it was quiet except for us on the tee. My caddie (Brian Fitch) and I high-fived way too hard, and my hand got a little sore for a few minutes. We got a little too aggressive with it.â€

How Houston could be an unprecedented win for Dustin JohnsonHow Houston could be an unprecedented win for Dustin Johnson

HOUSTON - Dustin Johnson has been on the PGA TOUR for more than a decade, but he has the opportunity Sunday to accomplish something he's never done before. RELATED: Leaderboard Johnson has 23 wins, but he's never been victorious after shooting over par in the opening round. Despite shooting 2-over 72 on Thursday, Johnson will start the Vivint Houston Open's final round just three strokes behind leader Sam Burns. Johnson followed his poor opening round with back-to-back 66s. He compared those last two rounds to the form he showed in the FedExCup Playoffs, when he finished 1st-2nd-1st to claim his first FedExCup. Johnson was admittedly rusty when he teed off Thursday at Memorial Park Golf Course. This is his first tournament since his sixth-place finish at the U.S. Open in September. Johnson missed his next two scheduled starts after testing positive for COVID-19. He isolated alone in a hotel room for 11 days, unable to practice or work out. "The most movement I made was to the shower," Johnson said earlier this week. He didn't start hitting balls until a week before the Vivint Houston Open and had to cut his first practice session short because of the fatigue that followed being sedentary for so long. Johnson made five bogeys on his first nine holes at Memorial Park. "I was driving it well, I was driving it in the fairway and I was making bogeys from the fairway," Johnson said about his opening round. "Just a little off with the irons, just a little rusty ... from competition. ... Until you get out here and you’re kind of playing in competition, you don’t really know where your game’s at." He's made just three bogeys in 45 holes since. He was bogey-free on Saturday. He's second in driving distance, 12th in driving accuracy and fourth in greens hit. Only two players - Brooks Koepka and Will Gordon - shot lower Saturday. "Obviously after the first nine holes I’ve played pretty solid and I like the way I’m playing. I’m swinging well," Johnson said. "I'm seeing a lot of similarities to how I was playing back when I was playing really well a couple months ago. The game’s feeling really good going into next week and obviously we’ve still got another day tomorrow and I feel like I’m in a good position with a chance to win."

Adam Svensson shoots 62 to lead Barbasol ChampionshipAdam Svensson shoots 62 to lead Barbasol Championship

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — Adam Svensson had two eagles in a 10-under 62 to take a two-stroke lead Thursday in the PGA TOUR’s Barbasol Championship. Playing through temperatures in the 90s at Keene Trace, the Canadian eagled the par-5 15th and eighth holes. The first eagle came after his lone bogey on No. 14, and the second — on a 31-foot putt — gave him the lead. “I had a couple of top 25s the last few events and I’ve always had, not issues, but just kind of struggled a little with the putter,” said Svennson, whose best finish this season was a tie for seventh at the Sony Open in Hawaii. “I’ve been working more on putting than I have ball-striking, usually it’s the other way around for me. The extra work and extra time spending with putting has helped my game even more than just hitting balls.” Ricardo Gouveia of Portugal and Robin Roussel of France each shot 64. The Barbasol Championship is the DP World Tour’s first co-sanctioned event in the U.S. and features 50 players from the DP World Tour among 156 competitors. The winner will get the final spot next week in The Open Championship at St. Andrews. Gouveia is making his second PGA TOUR start. “It was a great round, really solid off the tee, hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens, holed some good putts,” said Gouveia, who overcame a back issue that forced him to withdraw from the pro-am Wednesday. “Just a very solid round. Roussel eagled the par-5 11th in a bogey-free round that included six birdies. Trey Mullinax was at 65 with Matti Schmid, Camilo Villegas, Max McGreevy, Michael Kim, David Skinns, Mark Hubbard and Bo Van Pelt.
