Tony Finau comes from behind to win 3M Open

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Tony Finau shot a 4-under 67 to win the 3M Open by three strokes Sunday, erasing a five-stroke deficit with 11 holes left as Scott Piercy tumbled out of the lead down the stretch at windy TPC Twin Cities. RELATED: What’s in Finau’s bag? Piercy followed his tournament-record 54-hole score with a wince-inducing 76 to tie for fourth, four strokes back. Finau finished at 17-under 267. Sungjae Im (68) and Emiliano Grillo (71) tied for second place. James Hahn surged up the board with a 65 to match Piercy and Tom Hoge (70) at 13 under. Piercy bogeyed four of six holes before a triple-bogey implosion on No. 14, allowing Finau — playing in the preceding trio — to take over for good on his way to his third career tour victory. Finau made a 31-foot putt for birdie on the 15th green to strengthen his grip on the lead, as the 6-foot-4 Utah player calmly and confidently walked the TPC Twin Cities course in his white hat and aqua-striped polo. The surest sign this was Finau’s day came on No. 17. His tee shot clanged off the side of the grandstand, ricocheted back onto the green and rolled into the rough — just a few feet from the water. He landed the perfect chip within a foot of the hole to make the par 3, then smiled slightly as he playfully clamped his hand on his chest as if to pretend the sequence gave him heart trouble. On the daunting par-5 18th, Finau found the water off the tee to face one final challenge. After the penalty stroke, his recovery shots were spot on. With Piercy looking on from the fairway, Finau made a 3-footer for bogey to seal it. He pumped his fist several times, took off his cap and walked off to embrace his family. Finau, who tied for third at the 3M Open in 2020, jumped from 30th to 17th in the FedExCup race. He entered the week ranked 17th in the world. Piercy shared the first-round lead with Im on Thursday after a 65 and pulled away from the pack Friday with a 64 to take a three-shot edge into the weekend. The 43-year-old from Las Vegas, who still makes his native city his home base, stretched his lead to four strokes after enduring the 6 1/2-hour delay Saturday to let the rain and lightning play through. His foot bothered him so much he started taking his right shoe off after each swing and walking in his sock to the the next lie. That was nothing compared to the grind he found himself in Sunday. He was at 20-under after six holes. Less than an hour later, Piercy was in trouble. After posting only three bogeys on his first 61 holes, he went over par on seven of his last 11. That included the 7 he turned in on No. 14. Piercy’s tee shot landed in the fairway bunker, and his sand wedge didn’t get him out of the sand. With a risky, last-ditch approach to get back on track, his next try from the bunker splashed in the water short and left of the green — instead of a safer play to the right. After the drop, Piercy hit into the rough. Then his next attempt stopped 3 inches short of the cup. Grillo, the Argentine who tied for second at the John Deere Classic three weeks ago, also had a triple bogey that loomed large in the end, a 7 on No. 7.

Max Homa makes move after playing casual round at North BerwickMax Homa makes move after playing casual round at North Berwick

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland – Max Homa’s back was sore and his legs were tired, but getting to play one of Scotland’s historic links was worth it. And it may have helped him get back in contention at the Genesis Scottish Open. RELATED: Leaderboard “A 66 helps the body feel a little better,” Homa said after shooting that score in the third round at the Renaissance Club. He’d played 36 holes a day earlier, following his second-round 71 at Renaissance Club with a casual round at course that he’d been hankering to play ever since he saw it on a No Laying Up video a few years ago. North Berwick’s West Links is just a nine-minute drive from the venue for this week’s Genesis Scottish Open and Homa wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to play a course that he thought “looked like the coolest course in the world” after seeing it on YouTube. “It became my favorite course I had never played,” Homa said. “I knew I was going to be beat but it’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime things and I’d be kicking myself if I didn’t play.” Homa had already passed on a round at historic Muirfield because his caddie’s clubs didn’t arrive on time. He wasn’t going to miss North Berwick, as well. Golf has been played on the course since the 17th century, and it is known as the home of the original Redan hole and for the ancient wall that runs through several of the holes. Homa teed off at 4:30 p.m. Friday with caddie Joe Greiner, swing coach Mark Blackburn and North Berwick assistant pro Scott Gillies. All four birdied the 18th hole around 8:30 p.m. and Homa was proud to report that he and Greiner, who are friends since childhood, “drummed” Blackburn and Gillies. Photo and video of the round started circulating on social media Friday night, as well. “Playing the first Redan makes it neat,” said Homa, who also eagled North Berwick’s par-5 eighth hole after hitting 3-wood from 212 yards. “It was one of the best golf experiences I’ve ever had.” He made the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open with a shot to spare after opening with consecutive 71s. He birdied his opening hole of the third round and added another eagle on the third hole. He made just one birdie over the next 15 holes, at the par-5 10th, but also was bogey-free for the day. After starting the third round in 38th place, he sat in the top 10 for most of Saturday. Homa ranks 10th in the FedExCup after two wins this season and a high finish could also help him in his Presidents Cup candidacy, as he sits eighth in the U.S. standings.

Matt Fitzpatrick a winner again at Brookline as U.S. Open championMatt Fitzpatrick a winner again at Brookline as U.S. Open champion

BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) — Matt Fitzpatrick of England is a champion again at The Country Club, this time with the grandest of trophies. A U.S. Amateur champion in 2013. The U.S. Open champion Sunday. RELATED: What’s in Fitzpatrick’s bag In a three-way battle at Brookline that came down to the wire, Fitzpatrick seized control with a great break and an even better shot on the 15th hole for a two-shot swing. He was even more clutch from a fairway bunker on the 18th that set up par for a 2-under 68. Victory was not secure until Will Zalatoris, who showed amazing fight-back from every mistake, dropped to his knees when his 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th just slid by the left side of the cup. Zalatoris was a runner-up in the second straight major. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler never recovered from back-to-back bogeys to start the back nine. He had a 25-foot birdie chance on the 18th that just missed and left him one behind. Fitzpatrick is the second man to win a U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open on the same course, joining Jack Nicklaus who turned the trick at Pebble Beach. Juli Inkster won the U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Women’s Open at Prairie Dunes. Along with the $3.15 million in prize money, Fitzpatrick had the gold Jack Nicklaus medal draped around his neck. He moved to No. 10 in the FedExCup standings. Fitzpatrick, who briefly played at Northwestern before turning pro, won for the eighth time worldwide, and this was his first on the PGA TOUR. Fitzpatrick said he won the member-member at The Bear’s Club in Florida at the start of the year, the course Nicklaus built. “He gave me a bit of abuse at the start of the year. He said, ‘Finally. Congratulations for winning in the States,'” Fitzpatrick said with a laugh. And then slightly lifting the trophy, Fitzpatrick sent a fun message to Nicklaus: “Jack, I won a second time.”
