Titleist debuts Vokey Design SM7 wedges on PGA Tour in Las Vegas

Titleist Vokey Design Spin Mill wedges have been the most played wedges on the PGA Tour for years, and this week at the Shiners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas, the next-generation SM7 wedges make their debut. While Titleist is not discussing details about the SM7, several players took to social media to sing its praises. Like the Vokey Design SM6 wedges that they likely will replace in the Titleist stable, the SM7 wedges appear to have more mass concentrated at the top of the hitting area of the sand and lob wedges. The pitching wedges and gap wedges (lofts of 46 to 52 degrees) have thin toplines and extra mass in the lower portion of the heads, as they tend to be used on full-swing, square-faced shots from fairway or rough.

AVONDALE, La. — Jon Rahm and Ryan Palmer shared the lead with Scott Stallings and Trey Mullinax as the Zurich Classic of New Orleans finally got back on schedule. Rahm and Palmer played 30 holes Saturday in the event delayed by rain for more than seven hours Thursday, finishing off a 7-under 65 in the alternate-shot second round and shooting 64 in best-ball play in the third. Stallings and Mullinax played 27 holes, shooting 70-62. Rahm carried the team in the third round, making eight birdies. Palmer saved bogey on the par-3 17th after both players hit into the water, and Rahm made a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th to match Stallings and Mullinax at 23-under 193. Brandan Grace and Justin Harding were a stroke back. The South Africans played 32 holes, shooting 68-61. The final round Sunday will be played in alternate shot.

Rookie Corey Conners sets the pace at Valspar ChampionshipRookie Corey Conners sets the pace at Valspar Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – What a difference a few days can make. On Monday, Corey Conners made an unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the Valspar Championship. He was leading the tournament when he walked off the course Thursday afternoon. Conners’ 71 on Monday at Southern Hills Plantation in nearby Brooksville, Florida, was six shots too high to earn a spot in this week’s PGA TOUR stop, but the rookie learned later that day that he got in the Valspar field after another player withdrew. Conners made five birdies and just one bogey on a difficult day at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course. Cool, breezy conditions played to the strengths of the Canadian who attended college at Ohio’s Kent State, where he was teammates with PGA TOUR winner Mackenzie Hughes. “I don’t overpower it, but everything is really solid, Conners said. “I definitely like the challenge and like golf courses that put a premium on the fairway and hitting the green. He missed just four fairways Thursday, but his short game saved him several times as he hit just 11 greens. “It was a lot of tap-in pars and made some birdies, said Conners, who needed just 24 putts Thursday, ranks 133rd in the FedExCup. He has made the cut in nine of 10 starts this season, but hasn’t finished better than T29. He was a two-time U.S. Amateur semifinalist (2013, ’14), losing to Gunn Yang in the 2014 final. OBSERVATIONS Rory McIlroy’s struggles continued Thursday at the Valspar Championship. He three-putted the last hole for 74, his fifth consecutive over-par round. It’s the first time since April 2010 that McIlroy has had more than four consecutive over-par rounds on TOUR. He’s 12-over par in his past five rounds. He didn’t hole a birdie putt Thursday. His lone birdie was a holed bunker shot on his 16th hole. Some big names struggled down the stretch Thursday. Patrick Reed, who lost a playoff to Jordan Spieth here in 2015, reached 4 under with four holes remaining, but played Nos. 15-18 in 4 over par. Sergio Garcia was 3 under par with six holes remaining, but played his final six holes in 2 over to shoot 70. Adam Scott, who played alongside Garcia, also reached 3 under on his back nine before signing for a 70. Scott took his first lesson from instructor George Gankas, an Instagram sensation with more than 92,000 followers. Chris Couch, who’s making his first PGA TOUR start since 2012, shot 71. The 44-year-old birdied his first hole, then made 16 consecutive pars before bogeying the 18th. He has four events to earn $311,662 to retain exempt status for the remainder of the season. Steve Stricker, who picked up his first PGA TOUR Champions victory last week at the Cologuard Classic, opened the Valspar Championship with a 1-under 70.

Sybi Kuchar fills in after Zach Johnson’s caddie goes down with illnessSybi Kuchar fills in after Zach Johnson’s caddie goes down with illness

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Damon Green, caddie for Zach Johnson, went down with illness after 14 holes and could not continue in the first round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Sybi Kuchar, wife of Johnson’s playing partner Matt (7-under 64), took the bag for the last four, during which Johnson made an eagle and went 2-under to salvage an even-par 71. “He hadn’t been feeling well the last few days, Johnson said of Green. “I’m assuming he was dehydrated, but I don’t know. Matt saw Damon struggling, and I did, too. He didn’t look right. PGA TOUR staff brought him in. I’d like to say it was the first time, but it’s happened like four times at Maui, NORTHERN TRUST at Bethpage, and a couple other places. Green later confirmed he was suffering from dehydration and received an IV. Johnson had a decision to make on who should get the bag when Green exited. Kuchar, who like Johnson lives in St. Simonds Island, Georgia, was happy Sybi could help. “I didn’t talk too much to Damon, but you could tell it was heat fatigue, heat exhaustion, whatever the term is, Matt Kuchar said. “It was really getting the best of him. I knew Sybi was in the crowd, I knew she had caddied for me before and was friendly with Zach Johnson, and figured she would be good to handle it, and Zach would go easy on her. “She knows the deal of keeping up and staying out of the way, Kuchar added, “and I knew Zach would be happy to see a friendly face to take over the bag. Sybi called the situation a first. Billy Horschel, the third player in the group, joked that someone should ask Matt about kissing another player’s caddie on the lips. Kuchar himself worked with a new caddie Thursday. He was a late commit to the tournament, and his usual caddie, John Wood, had planned a reunion that conflicted with Mayakoba. Kuchar gave him the week off and hired a local caddie whose nickname is “Tucan (real name: David). Tucan was on the bag for 32-year-old Mexican Armando Favela as the former Loyola University golfer won a qualifier at El Camaleon to get into the field. (He shot 67 on Thursday.) And now Tucan is on the bag for the early co-leader Kuchar. (Kramer Hickok also came in with 64.) Still, it was the situation with Johnson, Green and Sybi Kuchar that was more unusual. But not unprecedented. “I’ve had friends fill in, I’ve had my brother in law, I’ve had random individuals I don’t know, Johnson said. “I would have called a security guy or a rules official to have somebody brought out, but Sybi has done this before and she’s in great shape, so there you go.
