Tiger Woods ready for WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play return

AUSTIN, Texas – This time Tiger Woods is just happy to be here. That doesn’t mean the three-time World Golf Championship – Dell Technologies Match Play champion isn’t hoping to make it a fourth win in the man on man showdown – he’s just cognizant of the progress he’s made to be back for the first time since 2013. In that time Woods’ has had four back surgeries. He also recently dealt with a neck complaint. But he’s also successfully returned to the winner’s circle at the 2018 TOUR Championship. It is that victory, and the schedule he endured, that gives the 43-year-old confidence he could get through seven rounds in five days to win. “Hopefully I can play well enough to get to that point to where I’m in the finals,â€ the 80-time PGATOUR winner said on the eve of his first match. “The end of last year gave me a lot of confidence that I played as many events as I did to end the season. I was tired, but my body held up. “My training has been pretty good. My neck has been feeling better, which is nice. And so I have to play well and beat the guy in front of me in order to have that situation where I’m there on Sunday in the finals. There’s a lot of work to be done between now and then.â€ Woods is slated to play against fellow TOUR winners Aaron Wise, Patrick Cantlay and Brandt Snedeker in his group. In his 13 previous appearances in the event it was a single elimination format.  “I’m looking forward to getting introduced to this new format. This will be a little bit different than what I’m used to,â€ Woods added. “I guess you can halve a match and still move on. And so that’s different. I don’t really know the intricacies of it all. I just know that I need to win all three, and I move on. It’s not real complicated. Play well and take care of the guy in front of me. “I’m looking forward to the fact that I just get to focus on one guy. Each and every shot is different, and you don’t really care what the rest of the field is doing. I just have to beat the guy standing in front of me.â€ The first guy up is PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Wise, a 22-year-old that Woods is actually well aware of given his old college teammate Casey Martin was Wise’s college coach when he was winning an NCAA title in 2016. “I watched him play well when they were in Eugene. And Casey said a lot of good things about him when he was being recruited, as well as when he was in college. Amazing talent,â€ Woods said. “Obviously he won at the Nelson and he has the game to win golf tournaments. I get to go out there and put a lot of pressure on him and hit the ball well and hopefully get the ball in the right spot to make putts.â€

After an exhilarating week at the Masters it’s time to exhale and enjoy the (s)Low Country lifestyle of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for the RBC Heritage. Pete Dye’s Harbour Town Golf Links in the Sea Pines Plantation will provide the backdrop, as it has done every year except 2011. The family-friendly atmosphere of resort life doesn’t mean easy by any means. Pete Dye’s tiny Bermuda greens, tree-lined fairways plus the coastal breezes makes this event anything but a hit-and-giggle. The pros love this test as the Par-71 (7,099 yards) doesn’t suit the bomb-and-gouge faction. Rather it requires decision-making, shot-shaping and the ability to navigate the winds that are usually ever-present this time of year. The “rough” won’t catch or slow down errant tee shots so playing out of the tress will be necessary and possible. The closely mown areas around the greens will provide a platform for plenty of chip-ins this week as well. Also, at less than 7,100 yards, finding the fairway will result in more wedges and lofted irons from premium attacking positions. Some of the smallest greens on TOUR won’t run white-hot because of the undulation and potential for wind so expect well-hit putts to roll in and Satoshi Kodaira returns and will look to join Boo Weekley as the only players to defend their title this century. The field of 132 is playing for a purse of $6.9 million with the winner’s share $1.242 million plus 500 FedExCup points. Need more Course Info? Check Rob Bolton’s Power Rankings, The First Look and Course Preview. Recent Winners Satoshi Kodaira (2018, -13): Making only his 15th TOUR start and his first at HTGL, the Japanese defeated Si Woo Kim on the third playoff hole to win the 50th edition. He began the day six back of Ian Poulter’s 54-hole lead and five back of Kim before he posted 66 on a blustery morning. Kodaira continued the trend of Masters participants winning here (only seven since 1982 have not played the week before) as he was T28 the week prior at Augusta. He also made it six consecutive winners who have overcome three or more shots in the final round. #PlayAll72. Notables: Led the field in proximity and continued the streak of winners to hit the top seven in Strokes-Gained: Tee-to-green. … The last four winners have been T2 or better in Par-4 scoring. … Bryson DeChambeau (T3) fired 64 in Round 2 to lead by one after 36 holes. … Poulter was looking to win for the second time in three weeks (Houston Open) but crumbled with 75 in the breeze (T7). Over 50 years the average winning score is 11-under. Wesley Bryan (2017, -12): Making only his 18th start on TOUR, the South Carolinian became the first native to lift the trophy. Like Kodaira, it was also his first time in the event so course history won’t be a dominant angle this week. Bryan only hit 40 GIR, the worst ever for a winner, but led the event in scrambling. Notables: Bryan made up four shots as Jason Dufner couldn’t make his 54-hole lead stand up. … Poulter began the day three back before 73 knocked him to T11. … First time the cut was under-par in 49 editions (-1). … Bryan, one of the seven not to play the week before, is not in the field this week as he recovers from a torn labrum. Branden Grace (2016, -9): The South African began the streak of first-time TOUR winners. Luke Donald led Grace by three entering the final round but finished T2 with Russell Knox, two back. Grace holed plenty of putts but he was also third in scrambling and second in Strokes-Gained: Tee-to-Green; also finished T7 in 2015 and T11 in 2017. Notables: Bryson DeChambeau made his professional debut and collected T4 cash. … Only five shots separated T30 thru T5. Power Rankings: ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIPPower Rankings: ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP

This is an important time in history for golf in Japan. The inaugural edition of the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP this week reflects a commitment – at least six years to be exact – of the PGA TOUR visiting and growing with the country. After an extended hiatus, the PGA TOUR Champions returned to conduct events in 2017 and 2019, almost as a soft reopen for what’s coming. The renewed focus in the landing of the rising run includes next summer’s Olympic Games. The Japan Golf Tour is among the preeminent circuits around the world, but there hasn’t been a men’s event eligible to all since the World Cup of Golf in 2001. That was held in the afternoon shadow of Mount Fuji at The Taiheiyo Club in Gotemba City. The co-sanctioned ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP is hosted by Narashino County Club in the Chiba Prefecture east of Tokyo. Scroll past the projected contenders in the field of 78 for details on the tournament, the course and more. POWER RANKINGS: ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP Tiger Woods, Jason Day, Marc Leishman, Ian Poulter and THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES runner-up Danny Lee will be included among the notables covered in Tuesday’s Fantasy Insider. ZOZOTOWN is the apparel company responsible for making the PGA TOUR’s first-ever annual tournament in Japan possible. The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP debuts with a prize fund of $9.75 million and there is no cut. The winner will receive $1.755 million, 500 FedExCup points and fully exempt membership through 2021-22. The field reserves space for 60 golfers in order of final position in the 2019 FedExCup Playoffs. As of midday Monday, Kevin Streelman (75th) was the last man in the field via that conduit. Ten spots are reserved for members of the Japan Golf Tour. Eight sponsor exemptions complete the field. Fifty golfers from last week’s THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES made the trip to the ZOZO. Narashino CC is a 36-hole facility. A composite course has been routed for the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP. It’s a par 34-36—70 stretching 7,041 yards. The five par 3s range from the 141-yard 13th to the 191-yard fifth. The longest of the trio of par 5s is the 608-yard 14th. The closing hole is a par 5 tipping at 562 yards, so the opportunity for walk-off heroics is in play. Golf courses of some age in Japan were built with two greens on every hole. At the time, it was a solution to present different strains of healthy grass no matter the season. Today, bentgrass blankets most greens primarily because advances in agronomy have allowed for improved conditioning where possible year-round. Narashino opened in 1965 with two greens per hole. They remain today. Those utilized for the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP have been prepped to run 11-and-a-half feet on the Stimpmeter. To honor the tradition of two greens in Japan, both the A and B greens on the par-4 fourth hole will be used at some point during the tournament. It’s possible that another hole or holes also will use alternate greens. As usual, targets in play for every round will be determined when hole locations are posted. If a golfer lands an approach on the incorrect green, the “wrong green” local rule will be enforced. It will allow the golfer relief off the green no closer the hole. No penalty will be assessed. Just like last week’s stop in South Korea, Japan has been hit by significant rain in recent weeks, so the greens will be receptive. Primary rough extending as high as three-and-a-quarter inches defending them and the Korai zoysiagrass fairways will be lush. More rain is on the way during the tournament. It’ll fall on Friday for sure and it can’t be ruled out on any of the other days. Strong winds will protect scoring during the first two rounds. It’ll abate on the weekend, which will allow the potential for a shootout to develop as ball-strikers tend to emerge on unfamiliar greens. Daytime highs will flirt with 70 degrees throughout.
