Tiger Woods proves his Presidents Cup worth at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP

Tiger Woods has squashed any concern about his potential as a captains pick for the Presidents Cup after a dominant and record tying win at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan. “I think the player definitely got the captain’s attention,â€ Woods said with a smile after taking out his 82nd PGA TOUR victory, tying him with Sam Snead for the most all-time. RELATED: Final leaderboard | History Loves Company | Woods’ 82nd win by the numbers Woods is the captain of the U.S. Team that will take on the Internationals in the biennial team competition at Royal Melbourne on Dec. 12-15 and while he did not secure one of eight automatic spots he now almost certainly will become just the second playing captain in the events history. Woods will add four players to his side on Nov. 7 with the help of his assistant captains and the eight players already secured on the team. To argue against Woods as one of the four would be a brave move. And not particularly smart if you ask Gary Woodland, the current U.S. Open champion who is also hoping for a pick and who played with Woods over the final two rounds in Japan. “If he doesn’t (pick himself) that’s dumb because right now it is hard to bet against that guy in anything, especially in match play,â€ Woodland said. “He’s going to have a force whether he is playing or not but I would pick him.â€ The only previous playing captain was Hale Irwin in the inaugural Presidents Cup in 1994. Irwin won the RBC Heritage in April that year. Woods won the Masters in April this year and has now added this 82nd career win. The doubt around Woods being in Australia in a playing capacity centered around the fact he had a fifth knee surgery two months ago and had played relatively poor golf after his Masters triumph. Add the fact he has had four back surgeries over his career amongst other injuries and some were worried about his fitness. There are no such worries now. The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP was his first start of the 2019-20 season and clearly he is fit enough to handle a spot in the team. Woods had to play 29 holes in a marathon Sunday thanks to weather issues and did it in stride. As a player in the Presidents Cup he would only be required to play one team session and singles but could play up to all five sessions if desired. “Physically, I can’t do any of the things I used to do. That’s just the way it is. Four back surgeries and my body just can’t do what it used to do, but I can certainly think my way around the golf course,â€ Woods said. “The knee didn’t allow me to rotate, and because of that it put more stress on my lower back and my hip. Now I’m able to clear a little bit better, I feel better, I’m able to hit shots that I know I can hit and this week was a good sign for the future.â€ Woods has played on eight previous Presidents Cup teams, the last in 2013, and has a 24-15-1 record. He was a member on the 1998 and 2011 teams that also played at Royal Melbourne. Woods also secured the clinching point for the U.S. team in the 2009, 2011 and 2013 Presidents Cups.

Say hello to the elephant humps at No. 4Say hello to the elephant humps at No. 4

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The volunteer had just arrived for his shift at the new par-3 fourth hole at Quail Hollow. Standing along the front rail of the grandstands, he was surveying the green, waiting for the next three players to arrive in Thursday’s first round of the PGA Championship. He wondered what he had missed. At that point, not much. Of the first 66 players with morning tee times who had completed that hole, none had made a birdie. On the flip side, there had been 22 bogeys. The temperature was rising and the fans sitting behind him were getting restless. “I heard a comment about the green,â€ the volunteer said, nodding to the undulations that contributed to the lack of fireworks. “They said they didn’t realize North Carolina had elephants until they saw the two that were buried here.â€ Consider it gallow’s humor. The 184-yard hole, which had not existed until last summer when renovations to Quail Hollow included the creation of three new holes, didn’t exactly receive rave reviews in its debut on the big stage. Grayson Murray: “Definitely not like the other 17.â€ Tony Finau: “A little dicey … not my favorite green.â€ Brooks Koepka: “A little too shallow … and too undulating.â€ Gary Woodland: “That pin today was brutal.â€ Englishman Paul Casey said simply, “Not a fan.â€ Murray, whose 3-under 68 leaves him tied for third behind leaders Thorbjorn Olesen and Kevin Kisner, was in the first group to play the fourth hole. He bogeyed it, as did playing partners Peter Uihlein and Rich Berberian Jr. Murray noted that Uihlein’s 7-iron hit two feet left, pin-high … and rolled down the back of the green. “That’s a little absurd, maybe,â€ Murray said. Patrick Reed said he hit a full 7-iron. “I launched it to the moon and I pushed it from where my line was right at the flag,â€ Reed said. “Landed three yards short of the hole and still went over the green.â€ David Lingmerth was the 70th player to complete the hole Thursday – and the first one to make a birdie, rolling in a putt from 16 feet, 7 inches. Ultimately, he would be the only player in the morning wave to make a birdie, with 24 bogeys and one double bogey made by those first 78 players. The hole was more accommodating in the afternoon, with Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, Bryson DeChambeau, Graham DeLaet, Danny Lee and Byeong Hun An making birdies. An had the longest putt, at 34 feet, 5 inches. Fowler had the closest, just outside 6 feet. Joost Luiten found the best way to solve the green – by not having to putt on it. His 6-iron took one bounce, hit the flagstick and dropped in for a hole-in-one. It’s the 40th ace at the PGA Championship since 1970. But even Luiten, the guy with the most success on No. 4, understands the concerns. He also sees room for improvement. “I think if (the ball) missed the flag, I would’ve been over the green,â€ Luiten said. “I think that’s what they mean. There’s almost no way you can stop that ball on that green, especially not on the right side. As soon as it goes past the pin, it just rolls off. It’s a tough pin. It’s a small target and I just got lucky that it bounced in the hole. Sometimes you need a bit of luck in this game. “I think the green is a bit too severe. If they flatten out that green a little bit, it’s a bit more fair. It’s a better par 3 that way.â€ Perhaps we should have seen this coming. Earlier this week, Frank Nobilo previewed the hole on the Golf Channel. His succinct assessment? “I don’t think this will be the players’ favorite hole.â€ Given all the grumbling, the fourth hole – created last year when course designer Tom Fazio took land that previously had been the par-5 fifth hole – surprisingly was not the most difficult Thursday. Playing to a stroke average of 3.288, it ranked seventh overall. Even the two par-3s on the back nine were more difficult. Of course, both are significantly longer, the 13th more than 20 yards, the 17th more than 40 yards. So what is the issue with the new fourth hole? The focus is on those elephant humps, which some suggest take up too much space on the green and are too severe, making for small targets. There are few flat areas to stick a pin; Thursday’s location was so close to the bunker on the right side that “from the tee box, it looks like it’s in the bunker,â€ Finau said. “Visually, it’s hard to hit at that hole.â€ Players are forced to carry the three bunkers guarding the front of the green, but with the back of the green sloping down, shots struck in the middle were rolling into either the fringe, the first cut or even the thick second rough. With a firm putting surface, players were having trouble holding the green with their mid-irons. “When the greens are firm, it’s going to be hard to hit the green at all,â€ said Jim Herman. “I was able to hit it today. I had to really press the issue hitting an 8-iron. It’s probably a 7-iron club to get it all the way back there. But if anything’s landing near it, it was just going to go over. It’s just going to be a challenge all week.â€ Said Koepka, who bogeyed the hole after finding the right-hand bunker: “I think if they had the green a little bit flatter, it would have been a little bit better.â€ So would any player come to the fourth hole’s defense on Thursday? How about one of the Quail Hollow members, say, the guy with a U.S. Open win on his resume? Sorry. Webb Simpson even acknowledged the hole’s shortcomings. “I think they knew once they put it in that maybe it was a little too undulating, to be honest,â€ Simpson said after signing for a 5-over 76 that he called “disappointing.â€ Added Simpson: “It’s a beautiful hole. They did a good job with the trees and bunkering. But yeah, I think if they soften it a little bit, it will be a good thing.â€ Who knows, maybe that work will begin soon. But it won’t happen this week. So are there any potential changes for the next three rounds? The pin will move around, but only to a limited number of spots it can go. Perhaps a change in the tees will provide some relief. “Our group was kind of feeling like if you move the tee up 20 yards, instead of being a soft 6 or full 7, if it’s a 9-iron you probably can stop it close,â€ Reed said. “I’m sure they are going to mess around with that tee a little bit too,â€ Murray added. “Maybe we’ll hit a wedge in one day. If we have a wedge in our hand, it’s fine.â€ Whatever the set-up is for the rest of the week, players know there’s nothing they can do about it. Koepka, for one, will not lose sleep about No. 4. “I don’t really care that much, to be honest with you,â€ he said. “Everyone’s got to play it. So it doesn’t really bother me.â€ Give Herman the last word. “No reason to get supercritical about it. You’ve got to hit the shots. We’ve got wedges. We can get up and down.â€

Tale of the Tape: Ryder Cup, Day 2Tale of the Tape: Ryder Cup, Day 2

Europe continued to dominate early on day two taking the first Four-ball session 3-1 before splitting the afternoon Foursomes 2-2. It all adds up to a 10-6 lead for the home side. It is a huge mountain to climb for the USA in Sunday singles but they can take heart from the 2012 Ryder Cup. In Chicago it was the USA who led 10-6 on Saturday but Europe turned it around to win. BEST MATCH The Foursomes match that led off the afternoon between Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson and Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson was impressive. The icemen from Europe known for their ball-striking and the bash brothers from the USA known for their incredible power. Johnson and Koepka started hot to lead but miscued on the fourth hole to relinquish the advantage. They remained close throughout but never regained it from that point. Europe pushed two holes clear at the 10th but lost the 12th hole to once again be just barely ahead. Sensing the comeback they found another buffer birdie on 13. Then Koepka stepped up on the 15th hole, hitting a laser approach to tap in range to give hope of a turnaround. Enter the iceman from Sweden. Stenson blocked a potential win for the USA on the 16th with a clutch par putt and then clinched the match with an even longer par save on the 17th. BEST AMERICANS Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas stood up to be counted on Saturday. Paired together in both sessions the young Americans claimed two valuable points. First they took down the powder keg duo of Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm in Four-ball 2 and 1 and then, when they were very much needed, they combined in Foursomes to take out Poulter and Rory McIlroy 4 and 3. They improved their record as a team to 3-1 in the process and look like a solid pairing into the future. BEST EUROPEANS Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari. Can’t go past the pair who created history as the first European duo to go 4-0 in a single Ryder Cup. They join Larry Nelson and Lanny Wadkins as the only pair to do it at all. Fleetwood is a rookie and as such became the most successful rookie point getter in European history, beating Sir Nick Faldo’s three from three in 1977. If he wins his singles match he will be the first European rookie to go 5-0 and just the third rookie of all time behind Gardner Dickinson (1967) and Larry Nelson (1979). BEST STAT In 2012 at Medinah in Chicago the European team trailed 10-4 late on Saturday before winning the last two matches to claw to 10-6 heading to Sunday singles. They were clutch wins as it sparked a momentous comeback on Sunday where they won the last session 8.5-3.5 to win the Cup. Can the USA repeat the Miracle at Medinah? Another similarity … it was the last Ryder Cup to go through the opening four sessions with no halved matches much like has happened so far in Paris. BEST USE OF HINDSIGHT Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed did not work as a combination on Friday. They did not work again on Saturday morning as Woods was forced to try to carry a woeful Reed but was unable to do so in a 4 and 3 loss to Molinari and Fleetwood. Reed’s play was especially poor on Saturday with multiple wild tee shots. In stroke play he would have struggled to break 80. But one thing about the man formerly dubbed as Captain America … he won’t give up. He will need to turn things around and salvage something in singles. ROOKIE REVIEW USA Bryson DeChambeau (0-2-0) – Once again sat out the morning before being paired with Tiger Woods in alternate shot. The pair hit the buzz saw that was Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood and were thrashed. Hit some poor shots under pressure. Justin Thomas (3-1-0) – Teamed with good friend and fellow former FedExCup champ Jordan Spieth in both sessions again on Saturday. This time they managed two critical victories. Tried desperately to lift the American tilt. Tony Finau (1-1-0) – Unable to repeat Friday mornings win with Brooks Koepka, falling to Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy 2 and 1. Stepped up late in the match with a couple of wins, including a great putt on the 16th hole, but it wasn’t enough.  EUROPE Tommy Fleetwood (4-0-0) – A stud on debut in the Ryder Cup. Teamed with Francesco Molinari to become just the second pairing ever to go 4-0 in a single Ryder Cup and the first ever Europeans to do so. Takes the record for most points earned by a European rookie in Ryder Cup history. Alex Noren (1-1-0) – Sat out the morning once more before once again joining Sergio Garcia in Foursomes. After a big win on Friday they were unable to repeat, falling to Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson. Tyrrell Hatton (1-1-0) – Played a solid support role to Paul Casey in Four-ball on the way to an impressive win over Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler. While Casey was the chief destroyer Hatton’s clever play opened the door for his teammate to be aggressive. Thorbjørn Olesen (0-1-0) – Was benched all day Saturday. Jon Rahm (0-2-0) – Despite playing with plenty of passion Rahm was once again on the losing side in the morning Four-ball and sat out the afternoon session. While he produced handfuls of great holes he also failed to uphold the standard throughout with the lack of consistency proving costly.
