Tiger Woods optimistic after knee surgery

Tiger Woods’ return to Japan also marks another return from knee surgery. Woods recently had an arthroscopic procedure performed on his left knee. RELATED: Tiger to release official memoir “Unfortunately, I’ve been down this road with my knee before,” Woods said Monday in Japan. “This is my fifth operation on it. I understand what it takes to come back from it. It’s been nice to have movement again and not having it catch and lock up.” Woods, who had arthroscopic surgery two months ago, played the made-for-television “MGM Resorts The Challenge: Japan Skins” event on Monday. He’s also competing in this week’s ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, the first PGA TOUR event in Japan. Narashino Country Club, which is located about 30 miles northeast of central Tokyo, is hosting both events. Woods won five skins on Monday, finishing second to Jason Day in the four-man competition that also included FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama. Woods’ latest surgery repaired minor cartilage damage in his left knee. He planned to have the procedure after last year’s Hero World Challenge, but delayed it after winning the TOUR Championship. His knee troubled him all season, becoming more bothersome after he won the Masters in April. “I figured I would keep rolling with it,â€ Woods said. “I tried to get through it the rest of the year and it progressively got worse and got to where it was affecting even reading putts. It started affecting my back and the way I was walking and trying to play.â€ After the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, Woods isn’t scheduled to compete again until his Hero World Challenge. Whether he will play in the Presidents Cup is undecided. The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP will be Woods’ final start before he announces his four captain’s picks. Woods made the cut in half his six starts since his Masters victory. He finished T9 at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide and T21 at the U.S. Open. He withdrew with a mild oblique strain after shooting a first-round 75 at THE NORTHERN TRUST, and his season ended after a T37 showing at the BMW Championship. He finished 42nd in the FedExCup. “(The surgery) made me more hopeful that I could … play this week, play Hero and play Australia,â€ Woods said. “The way I was feeling toward the middle part of the year, it was going to be a tall order to be able to do it all. “I’m excited about having this end-of-year run where I’m feeling much more fit and I don’t have the achiness that I’ve been dealing with for the last couple years.â€ Woods has won twice in Japan, at the 2004 and 2005 Dunlop Phoenix. He said he would like to return next year to compete in the Tokyo Olympics. Woods watched the archery competition at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. “It would be an honor to represent my country in the Olympic Games,” Woods said. “Right now I’m ninth in the world ranking and hopefully in the next year I can have a good year and qualify and represent my country.”

How Baltimore native Michael Phelps helps Jordan Spieth and Jon RahmHow Baltimore native Michael Phelps helps Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – FedExCup hopefuls Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth have revealed their friendships with the most decorated Olympic athlete of all-time in Michael Phelps has been a difference maker in their careers, particularly their mental game. Phelps – the greatest swimmer in Olympic history with 28 medals in the pool, 23 of them gold – has turned his attention to athlete mental health since his retirement from the sport in 2016, revealing his own battles with depression and suicidal thoughts after the 2012 Olympics. The Baltimore native was at the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in his hometown on Wednesday for the pro-am, paired with Spieth on the eve of the second FedExCup Playoffs event. And it was a great lift for former FedExCup champion Spieth after a roller coaster 79 to close last week’s Playoff opener at Liberty National that included back-to-back triple bogeys at the turn and left him in 73rd place. Despite the stumbles in New Jersey Spieth is in the midst of a resurgent season and is already certain of a place in the TOUR Championship at East Lake next week as he currently sits seventh in the FedExCup standings. But it is his first trip back since being runner up in the season long race in 2017, after which he suffered a lengthy win drought. That’s where his Phelps connection began to grow. “I pick his brain on the mental side of things now. He’s getting very involved in mental health, and it’s been something that I’ve actually worked on a lot in the last few years,” Spieth revealed at Caves Valley. “And that’s been a space that probably should be talked about more within athletes, their experiences across different sports, too. I’ve been really fortunate that he’s lent an ear and also bounced ideas off me. “(We have talked about) his passion to his preparation and what goes into his recovery… and without getting into details that are competitive advantages, I think he’s been a fantastic kind of friend. To have a golf lover be the most decorated Olympian of all time, it’s really good for our sport, and it’s even better that I’m able to access it.” But Spieth isn’t the only top PGA TOUR player getting great guidance from Phelps. Jon Rahm – who sits second in the FedExCup behind last week’s winner Tony Finau – has also benefitted. The Spanish star is looking to cap of the season with his first FedExCup after claiming his first major championship at the U.S. Open in June. “He’s been very open to my questions. Any time I have a question about anything, he would respond,” Rahm said. “He’s a great guy. He’s gone through a lot, and as an athlete he’s somebody to look up to very easily. “When you’re the greatest Olympian of all time, you definitely have a couple tricks up your sleeve, a couple good moments of wisdom in that sense… I’m not going to disclose too much on what I’ve asked him golf-wise, but he has helped me a lot. He has texted me every once in a while when I’m doing good or bad.” Rahm revealed Phelps was a big help after the recent birth of his first son Kepa, which came in the lead up to the Masters in April. Phelps had experienced a similar scenario with his own child being born during training in 2016. “He knows how hard it is to be there and then right after that, gone, I have to go train, and not see him. He did help me out with that,” Rahm added. “That’s not an easy feeling. It wasn’t the easiest thing to do, even if it’s the Masters. I really did not want to leave that room, but he helped me out with that.”

Jason Day’s mother passes away from cancerJason Day’s mother passes away from cancer

Adenil ‘Dening’ Day, mother to 12-time PGA TOUR winning Australian Jason and daughters Kim and Yanna, passed away peacefully Wednesday night in Ohio with her family by her side after a long battle with cancer. Jason, who was a late withdrawal from this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, rushed to Columbus to be by her side. “Last night, my mum peacefully left us after battling cancer for five years. We are heartbroken but incredibly grateful for the gift we had in her living with us for the last almost two years full time,” Day said Thursday in an Instagram post. “She fought so hard until the very last breath. I am forever indebted to her for the sacrifices she made for me to be successful, and for the person she helped me to become. We will miss her so much.” Dening Day was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017, a condition revealed by an emotional Jason during that year’s World Golf Championships – Dell Technologies Match Play. Through specialist treatment in Day’s adopted hometown of Columbus, she was able to beat back the disease. But cancer returned a few years ago, which saw Dening leave Australia to continue a new fight while living with Jason, his wife Ellie, and their four kids Dash, Lucy, Arrow and Oz. Daughters Yanna, Kim and grandson Cooper also flew from Australia a few weeks ago to be on hand as her condition worsened. Dening’s long fight sadly ended Wednesday night. She was 65. Cancer has now claimed both of Day’s parents. His father Alvyn passed away from stomach cancer when Jason was 12, leaving Dening as a single mother. With a young Jason spiraling out of control at the time, she borrowed money from his uncle and sold their house to get him into a boarding school with a golf program. It was there he met former coach and caddie Colin Swatton and the two began a journey that would ultimately land on the PGA TOUR and bring world No. 1 status.
