South Florida native T.J. Vogel was the medalist in Monday’s qualifier for The Honda Classic. Vogel, who was born in Pembroke Pines, shot 64 at Mayacoo Lakes Country Club to qualify for his second event of the season. Andrew Novak and PGA TOUR rookie Nate Lashley shot 65 to earn their starts in The Honda, while Jhared Hack grabbed the final spot in a playoff. Vogel and Novak both qualified for this season’s The RSM Classic, as well. Both missed the cut. Vogel, 27, finished 10th on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada Order of Merit last year. As an amateur, he won the 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links and attended American Heritage High School in Plantation, about an hour from PGA National. Lashley, 35, is 166th in this season’s FedExCup standings, making the cut in three of nine starts. He earned his first PGA TOUR card by finishing 11th on the Web.com Tour’s Regular Season money list in 2017, winning the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. He won three times on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica in 2016 to win the money list. Novak, 22, turned pro last year out of Wofford College. He started his career on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada, making the cut in five of 11 starts. He shot 71-73 in his PGA TOUR debut at The RSM Classic. Last year, Hack finished 18th on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada’s Order of Merit. He had two third-place finishes in 12 starts. Hack, 28, has made one of four cuts on the Web.com Tour this year. The Florida native won the 2007 Western Amateur as a 17-year-old. Hack beat Ben Polland and Web.com Tour player Adam Svensson in a playoff Tuesday morning. Svensson is No. 2 on the Web.com Tour money list after winning The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at The Abaco Club. He was the medalist in the 2015 Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament at PGA National.

Chesson Hadley … If there’s a table on the PGA TOUR on which the 32-year-old is going to push all of his chips into its center, it’s in Vegas. Of course it is. Although he won the Puerto Rico Open in 2014, he’s earned more at the Shriners than at any other stop on the schedule. It’s the only tournament at which he’s recorded as many as three top 10s. That includes in each of the last two editions. He also has a streak of seven straight sub-70s on TPC Summerlin. And now he’s fresh off a T23 at Silverado where he scored par or better in every round and ranked highly in all ball-striking metrics. Nick Taylor … While not as impressive as Hadley’s résumé at TPC Summerlin, of all of the courses where the Canadian has made at least three appearances, this is the only site where he hasn’t missed a cut. And this is his sixth trip. His best finish is but a T25 in 2015, but his scoring average is a sporty 69.40. That kind of expectation defined his 2018-19 season during which he went 21-for-28 with four top 25s. He arrives having just polished off a front-loaded T10 at Silverado, his best individual performance in over 13 months. Denny McCarthy … Back already for another appearance on this page. He opened the season as a Sleeper for A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier and responded with a T31. He answered that with a T18 at the Sanderson Farms Championship before taking last week off. The 26-year-old paced the PGA TOUR last season in Strokes Gained: Putting. He’s seventh in the early going in 2019-20, but his ball-striking is measurably improved. It’s a small sample size to be certain, but no matter the data set, it’s always better than the alternative. Placed T15 at TPC Summerlin last year. Bronson Burgoon … Wait a sec. He arrived at the Safeway Open with a trio of top-six finishes and a pair of T19s in his previous six starts combined on two tours, and just now he’s appearing as a Sleeper? You betcha! He missed the cut at Silverado by two strokes, and he’s 0-for-2 at TPC Summerlin (2015, 2018), but if there’s one thing we’ve come to expect from him during his brief career, it’s that he possesses a propensity to pop with less notice than most of his peers. So, now that he’s been on a heater and fully exempt after meeting the terms of his medical extension at Greenbrier, he’s freer than ever before to get after it. Mark Hubbard … Others fresh off the Korn Ferry Tour Finals have made more noise early on, but he’s nipping on their heels. Currently 19th in the FedExCup standings with a T10 at Greenbrier and a T13 at Silverado. He’s connected for six top 25s in his last eight starts across two tours. His most important weapon has proven to be his putter, but he’s also well above average in splitting fairways. While his putting bails out poor approaches, when he hits greens in regulation, he goes for a high percentage of par breakers. Meanwhile, despite a seemingly deficient iron game, he led the KFT in par-3 scoring average in 2019. TPC Summerlin’s quartet of one-shotters is among the easiest set on the schedule, so the 30-year-old has all kinds of reasons to feels jolts of confidence in his fourth appearance in the tournament. What does this week's Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship have in common with the U.S. Open and the Masters? There are two editions of each during the 2020-21 PGA TOUR season. Like both previously scheduled editions of the majors, the 2020 Corales was bumped to the fall portion of this season due to the pandemic. As a result, it's a stand-alone tournament with 144 golfers chasing 500 FedExCup points for the victory. (The 2021 edition will return to its familiar status as an additional event in early spring.) Corales sits on the western coast of the Dominican Republic. Because of its exposure to wind, fairways and greens are expansive across the stock par 72 that stretches 7,666 yards. Although this is hurricane season and exactly on the opposite end of the calendar, the weather will resemble when the first two editions of the tournament were contested in late March. Prevailing winds from a generally easterly direction will be steady but not punishing. Passing showers can't be ruled out but sunshine will dominate and contribute to daytime highs in the upper 80s. Because the test tee to green is relatively benign, it's probable that a putting contest will determine that champion for the third time in as many editions. Brice Garnett paced his field in putts per GIR en route to the inaugural title, as did the 2019 champ, Graeme McDowell. Both also led their respective fields in putting: birdies-or-better. (ShotLink is not utilized for this tournament, Strokes Gained data is not collected.) G-Mac's path to the victory also showcased how wild it can get at Corales. His opening 73 was the highest first round by any winner in all of 2018-19, and he still won outright (by one) at 18-under 270. The secondary objective is the first in execution; that is, to pile up scoring opportunities to set up the par breakers. The Supreme paspalum greens max at 11-and-a-half feet on the Stimpmeter, but undulations everywhere serve as defense. This elevates the ability to hit it close. Of course, more broadly, hitting greens in regulation will ease the pressure off average putters. After debuting with a scoring average of 71.499 in 2018, the 2019 field improved to the tune of 71.074. A considerable chunk of the reason why is found at The Devil's Elbow consisting of the par-4 16th, the par-3 17th and the par-4 18th holes. The first field averaged 0.368 strokes over par for the week, but with some experience logged, the scoring average improved to just 0.103 strokes over par the last time. Garnett played the trio in even par; McDowell scored 1-over. In addition to the full allocation of FedExCup points up for grabs, the winner will earn an exemption into the 2021 Masters.
