Tiger Woods and son Charlie finish seventh at two-day exhibition event

Tiger Woods has enjoyed a dominant golfing career but added a new memory after he and 11-year-old son Charlie finished five shots back of world number three Justin Thomas and his father during an exhibition event in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday. Team Woods, both wearing Tiger’s signature Sunday red and black, placed seventh among a 20-team field of major champions and winners of The Players alongside a family member for the two-day PNC Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club. “I don’t think words can describe it,” 15-times major champion Woods said of competing alongside his son. “Just the fact that we were able to have this experience together, Charlie and I, it’s memories for a lifetime.” Charlie, the youngest competitor in the tournament’s history and perhaps its most anticipated, showcased impressive form at the scramble event and on several occasions looked every part his father as he worked his way around the course. During his team’s closing 10-under-par 62, Charlie rolled in a birdie at the par-four 10th and then unleashed a vintage low-uppercut Tiger fist pump that the golf world has seen countless times before. Team Thomas began their day with seven consecutive birdies en route to a 15-under-par 57 that brought them 25 under, one shot clear of Vijay Singh and son Qass. Team Singh shot a second straight 12-under 60 to finish on 24 under overall, while overnight leaders Matt Kuchar and his 13-year-old son Cameron carded an eight-under 64 to finish in a tie for fifth. Speaking after their opening round on Saturday, Tiger said: “First and foremost, I’m Dad. “But there is that competitive spirit that Charlie and I both share, and we want to win, but also being competitive and being with each other and leaning on one another, it was an absolute blast.”

Justin Thomas switches drivers at FedEx St. Jude ChampionshipJustin Thomas switches drivers at FedEx St. Jude Championship

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. – Late in a major-winning season may seem like an odd time to make an equipment change, but Justin Thomas has a new driver in the bag at this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship. This week at TPC Southwind, where Thomas won the 2020 World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, is Thomas’ first with Titleist’s new driver. Why change now? Titleist first brought the TSR drivers out on TOUR at the Travelers Championship, which Thomas had to withdraw from because of a back injury. He had the new driver at home but wasn’t able to sufficiently practice with the club before back-to-back events in Scotland because he wanted to rest his back. With three weeks off after The Open, he was able to put the new club through its paces and was ready to debut it this week. “The biggest difference is the spin,” Thomas said after his first-round 67 in Memphis. “When I heel it, it doesn’t spin crazy high and when I toe it, it’s somehow spinning a little more. It’s unbelievable in terms of misses.” Mishits on the heel of a driver tend to have more spin while misses on the toe tend to have less. Consistent launch conditions were one reason Thomas made the change, said Titleist tour rep J.J. Van Wezenbeeck. Thomas also saw an uptick in ball speed, according to Van Wezenbeeck, and liked the TSR3’s “classic shaping” and “clean look.” Thomas is using a 10-degree Titleist TSR3 with a Mitsubishi Diamana ZF 60 TX driver. The head is on the D1 setting, which takes three-quarters of a degree of loft off the face. Decreasing the loft also opens the face, which is a look at Thomas prefers. “I like it being a little bit open,” Thomas said. “I don’t like when I can’t see a lot of face because then I feel like I have to get it up in the air and then I start getting underneath it and that gets the two-way miss going. I feel like when I’m driving it my best, although I like to work it both ways, I feel like I aim at something and rip it and it goes pretty straight and falls right. Kind of letting the openness in the club let it fade a little bit.” Thomas entered the week at No. 8 in the FedExCup standings after a season that included his second PGA Championship win and top-10s in half his starts. He was sixth in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (+1.5) on Thursday. He’s trying to join Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as the only two-time winners of the FedExCup. Thomas won his first FedExCup five years ago, the same year that he won his first PGA Championship.

Robert Streb leads by three in quest for second win at The RSM ClassicRobert Streb leads by three in quest for second win at The RSM Classic

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - Banners honoring the past winners of The RSM Classic line the road leading into Sea Island Resort this week. Robert Streb admits that he sneaks a peek at the oversized photo of himself as he arrives at the course each day. "It's the only place I have a banner," he said. Streb won his lone PGA TOUR title here six years ago. Now he has a chance to be the only player with two banners hanging on Retreat Avenue. Streb will take a three-shot lead into the final round at Sea Island Resort. He shot 67 on Saturday to post a 54-hole total of 17-under 195. He'll be joined in Sunday's final group with two-time major winner Zach Johnson and Bronson Burgoon, who made five back-nine birdies Saturday after his caddie told him to move the ball back in his stance. Emiliano Grillo is alone in fourth place at 13 under par. None of the top four players on the leaderboard has won since 2015, when Johnson won The Open Championship and Grillo won his lone PGA TOUR title. Camilo Villegas, who's trying to win just months after the passing of his 22-month-old daughter, is five shots back, along with Kyle Stanley and Kevin Kisner, who won the first of his three PGA TOUR titles at the 2015 RSM Classic. Johnson is trying to become the first Sea Island resident to win The RSM Classic. Burgoon is seeking his first PGA TOUR victory. He and Streb attended Big 12 schools at the same time. Streb played for Kansas State. Burgoon hit the clinching shot for Texas A&M in its victory at the 2009 NCAA Championship. They couldn't recall playing with each other in college, however. "We didn't play with them much outside of conference. They were playing against bigger schools," said Streb, who finished third in the conference championship as a senior. Burgoon was fourth, while a player named Rickie Fowler finished in fifth place. This week, Streb hasn't looked like a player who's finished outside the top 125 in the FedExCup in each of the past three seasons. He has just one bogey in 54 holes at Sea Island, tied for fewest in the field. He's in the top 10 in both greens in regulation and Strokes Gained: Putting. Streb has missed just four greens over the past two rounds. This win would come in a much different fashion than his win here six years ago. He double-bogeyed the first hole of that tournament after snap-hooking his opening tee shot into a bush. He started the final round in 12th place, five shots off the lead, but shot 63 before winning in a playoff. His wife, Maggie, was pregnant with the couple's first child when he won. Now the couple has two kids, and the whole family is in Sea Island this week, as are Streb's in-laws. "We'll probably just get some dinner and chase the kids around a little bit, then put them to bed and then kill a little time in the morning with them," Streb said Saturday. Though it is the site of his lone PGA TOUR victory, Streb said he doesn't have any Sea Island traditions. He got ice cream from the local Dairy Queen on the eve of his win in 2014. The Dairy Queen has closed, but Streb said the family may treat itself again this evening. "Most likely a large," he joked. His win in 2014 kicked off a big season. He had nine top-10s - in addition to the win, he was in a playoff at the Greenbrier and had top-10s at a World Golf Championship (Bridgestone Invitational) and a major (PGA Championship). He entered the FedExCup Playoffs at No. 6 in the standings en route to his lone TOUR Championship appearance. He hasn't finished better than 63rd in the FedExCup since, however. "I had that really big year and kind of thought I would just keep trucking along," he said. "I didn’t play quite as well and I guess kind of gone through a lull for a little while. I don’t really have a good answer for you other than it’s just taken me too many shots to get the ball in the hole." Not this week.
