THE ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP on in Japan, WGC – HSBC Champions cancelled

ATLANTA, Ga. – PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan has confirmed THE ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP will go ahead in Japan on Oct. 21-24 as part of the new 2021-22 TOUR season but the World Golf Championships–HSBC Champions due to be played the week after in China has been cancelled. “ZOZO has been a great partner and we have been in regular contact with the government and local authorities about the plans to successfully stage this event this fall. The successful and safe golf competitions at the Tokyo Olympic games helped provide some confidence going forward,” Monahan said from East Lake Golf Club in the lead up to the TOUR Championship. Patrick Cantlay won the first of his now three wins this season at THE ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP last fall, however the event was held at Sherwood Country Club in Los Angeles due to the pandemic. It’s first staging in Japan in the 2019-20 season saw Tiger Woods claim his record equaling 82nd PGA TOUR win. Once again Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club will be the host. While Japan will host their event, China will miss out for the second consecutive year. “Following discussions with HSBC, we can confirm the cancellation of the 2021 WGC-HSBC Champions. Although it’s unfortunate to have to do so, we must ensure that we abide by the epidemic prevention policies of different markets which may cause inconvenience to the players and make tournament operations very challenging. Therefore, after careful consideration we had to make this difficult decision to cancel the event,” Monahan said. The commissioner allayed any fears for the events long term future. “It’s unfortunate that we’re not going to be able to play in Shanghai,” he said. “I expect that we will be playing there as soon as it’s acceptable, feasible, to do so, from a pandemic standpoint. We feel like we have got a long-term commitment to that marketplace in the form of a WGC.” Monahan also announced that with the cancellation in China the Bermuda Championship will now be played as a stand-alone event with full FedExCup points and an increase in the purse size. It was previously being staged as an opposite-field event.

Tringale’s life in the outdoorsTringale’s life in the outdoors

When he’s not on the golf course, Cameron Tringale likes to play tennis. He’s a runner, and the Californian enjoys hiking and camping, too. “Just all the outdoor stuff,â€ Tringale says. He’s even tested himself by climbing up the side of a mountain. More than once, too. Now, Tringale doesn’t have his own gear and he doesn’t go mountaineering on a regular basis. But he has gone climbing in the Santa Monica Mountains near his home, as well as Red Rock Canyon outside Las Vegas. “I like the challenge,â€ Tringale explains. “I like the feeling of the accomplishment. When you get to the top of a route, it feels good. “It’s also pretty nerve wracking at times. Your heart rate gets going. It’s fun to just put yourself in that position. It’s relatively safe. So, it’s pretty fun.â€ The 30-year-old estimates he was just out of Georgia Tech when he climbed for the first time. Tringale and Smith, who played on the golf team at Pepperdine, went up into the mountains for several climbs over the holidays that year. “You get a little nervous,â€ Tringale says. “When you are reaching up, you have to lurch up for a hold. You are hoping you grab it. If you don’t, you will fall. You have got someone holding the rope at the bottom.â€ Luckily for Tringale, he’s never fallen more than a few feet. And when he has climbed, he made sure to take precautions. Tringale probably hasn’t climbed in three years or so. His farthest trek up the face of a mountain was “pretty high,â€ maybe several hundred feet, says the man who obviously has no fear of heights. “We went up, kind of had a base camp on the ledge, and then up from that ledge even farther,â€ Tringale says. “(But) I don’t have crazy claiming aspirations. “Like I said, I’ve just kind of gone when I have been invited. I find the challenge enjoyable.â€ Tringale says rock climbing isn’t a “passionâ€ but he’s happy to have had the opportunity to go. And besides, it goes along well with his other interests. “I like being outside,â€ he says. “And usually, you have got to hike back to where the climbs are. I enjoy hiking, I enjoy being outdoors, being in nature.â€ Surfing and snowboarding are also squarely in Tringale’s wheelhouse. Not to mention, he puts skydiving and running a marathon on his bucket list. So does anyone worry about him when he scales the side of a mountain? “I don’t know who  I mean, my mom might worry, but what mom doesn’t,â€ he says with a smile.

Willie Mack shares Round 1 lead at APGA Tour event at World Golf VillageWillie Mack shares Round 1 lead at APGA Tour event at World Golf Village

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Willie Mack, fresh off of two starts on the PGA TOUR, and ranked collegiate golfer Mahindra Lutchman from Florida A&M University, shot 4 under-par 68s to take a share of the first round lead in the APGA Tour at World Golf Village tournament Monday at the renowned King & Bear layout. Mack is the Flint, Michigan, native who played in both the Farmers Insurance Open and The Genesis Invitational as a sponsor exemption in recent weeks after a decade as a top player on the APGA Tour and other pro golf series. Lutchman is a senior at Florida A&M in nearby Tallahassee who is the No. 3-ranked player in the APGA Collegiate Golf Ranking compiled by PGA TOUR University. They are two shots clear of second place finisher Daniel Augustus of Bermuda, and three shots ahead of a group that includes Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a two-time winner on the APGA Tour this year. The field of 49 players is competing for $25,000 in prize money with the tournament final round tomorrow on the 7,279-yard, par 72 golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. Mack, who sank a 30-foot putt for birdie on No. 12, was happy with the way he handled the blustery conditions. "When the wind is blowing, you need your short game and that was working for me today," he said after carding five birdies but closing with bogey on the par-5 18th hole. Did the PGA TOUR experience help me today? Definitely." Mack was 1 under after 14 holes in the Farmers Insurance Open first round before eventually missing the cut there and at The Genesis Invitational. Lutchman, who is joined in the field by teammate and APGA Collegiate Ranking No. 1 Mulbe Dillard, bogeyed the first hole but vaulted into contention with all pars and five birdies, including on 17 and 18. Dillard shot a three-over 75. If Lutchman and Dillard can retain their rankings through the spring college golf season, they will be provided with exemptions into the APGA Tour summer events along with expenses and entry into the Pre-Qualifying Stage of the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament. The APGA Tour at World Golf Village is the fourth tournament of the landmark 2021 season, featuring a record 13 events and $350,000 in prize money, almost double from the 2020 season for the tour, whose mission is to bring greater diversity to the sport of golf. The tournament is being conducted under social-distancing and health/safety guidelines in conjunction with regional authorities.
