The story behind Wayne Gretzky’s red Scotty Cameron ‘Gordie Howe’ putter

As he tells the story, Gretzky was playing Sherwood Country Club in a fivesome two years ago when his group called a twosome playing behind his group to play-through. One of the “gentlemenâ€ in the group was using a red putter. “I didn’t know it was Gordie’s putter, and I said ‘Gosh I love your putter,’â€ said Gretzky. The gentleman said, “Oh, it’s a Gordie Howe putter.â€ The next day, Gretzky says the gentleman sent him the putter. After receiving the putter, however, Dustin Johnson — his daughter Paulina’s fiancée, current Pebble Beach Pro-Am partner, and 19-time PGA TOUR winner — said the putter was “a little bit light.â€ Johnson took the putter and said, “I’m going to make it a little bit heavier for you, that’d be better for you.â€ Gretzky has been using the weight-adjusted putter for two years now, and by the way he speaks of the putter, it doesn’t sound like it’s coming out of the bag anytime soon. “It’s one of the favorite things I have in my life, because I idolized and loved Gordie so much,â€ Gretzky said. “[Gordie] would be killing himself laughing that I’m using his putter. But it’s so special that I have his putter. I really like it … oh my gosh, this is one of the greatest things I’ve ever had in my life. I keep getting more excited. Oh my gosh, it is so special for me. I idolized him, and we were good friends. Pretty special.â€ To keep the putter safe, Gretzky has a “GHSâ€ putter cover, which stands for Gretzky Hockey School. He and his son Ty founded the school in 2014 for “growth and development of youth hockey players,â€ according to its website. Gretzky also has the school’s logo stitched on his Vessel-G/Fore custom golf bag. Additionally, Gretzky has “99â€ — the jersey number he wore throughout his career, which is now retired throughout the NHL – stamped on his TaylorMade wedges and Wilson C100 irons (notice the toe portion of his irons). After playing the Monterey Peninsula Country Club Shore course on Thursday, Johnson and Gretzky are in T25 (7 under) as a team. Even idols have idols. Wayne “The Great Oneâ€ Gretzky, the leading scorer in NHL history, has a custom Gordie Howe-themed Scotty Cameron putter in his bag at the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am; he calls the putter “one of the greatest things I’ve ever had in my life.â€ The late Gordie “Mr. Hockeyâ€ Howe — who wore No. 9 — is a hall-of-fame hockey player who played for the Detroit Red Wings for 25 years. Although Gretzky went onto break many of Howe’s records, Gretzky says, “I idolized and loved Gordie so much … we were good friends.â€ Gretzky says he received a Gordie Howe jersey for Christmas when he was 6-years old, and he “was a huge Red Wings fan growing up.â€ Now, Gretzky is playing with one of Howe’s putters.

Monday qualifiers: Valero Texas OpenMonday qualifiers: Valero Texas Open

Aaron Baddeley led the way at open qualifying for this week’s Valero Texas Open, carding 6-under 66 at the Club at Comanche Trace to earn a tee time this week at TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course, as the historic event celebrates its 100th anniversary. Baddeley made five birdies and an eagle on Monday, against a single bogey. The four-time PGA TOUR winner has made four TOUR starts this season as he aims to play his way back to fully exempt status; he has also spent time on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2022. Shawn Stefani carded 5-under 67 to earn the second of four available spots. The veteran has spent the majority of this season on the Korn Ferry Tour, making two cuts in six starts. He has won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour and has made 194 career PGA TOUR starts, recording two runner-up finishes. Jake Kevorkian IV and Samuel Saunders each carded 4-under 68 to also secure spots in the Valero Texas Open field. No other player carded 4-under or better, so no playoff was needed. In all, 50 players competed for four spots in this week’s field. For all scores from the Club at Comanche Trace, click here.

NEW YORK CITY – Skratch and Mastercard today announced a two-part series documenting the journey of APGA Tour Player of the Year Kamaiu Johnson – who won the inaugural Mastercard APGA Player Achievement Award in 2022 and with it an exemption to play on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, beginning in December. Over six episodes, ‘Relentless Pursuit’ will follow Johnson as he competes on the APGA for the award, prepares for PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and eventually finds out whether he is able to keep eligibility status or qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour and continue the path to the PGA TOUR. “This past season on the APGA Tour was a dream come true and I’m incredibly grateful to have received the Mastercard APGA Player Achievement Award, giving me the opportunity to compete on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica,” remarked Johnson. “I’ve worked extremely hard to have an opportunity like this and I’m excited to share my story through the ‘Relentless Pursuit’ series. Support like this is incredibly important to all of us out on the APGA Tour as we hope to share our stories and provide inspiration to the next generation of minority golfers.” The APGA Tour was established in 2010 as a non-profit organization with a mission to bring greater diversity to the game of golf. The Mastercard APGA Player Achievement Award is an initiative to promote the top performer from the APGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Player Development Program, a 12-member subset of the APGA Tour focused on developing minority golfers who have shown success on the APGA Tour and who support its mission. Johnson earned the award after winning the 2022 Mastercard APGA Tour Championship to earn the top spot in the Player Development Program in 2022. He also captured a $50,000 first place prize from the event’s $150,000 purse, each the largest in APGA Tour history. The 29-year-old has four APGA titles in the last three years and has competed in events on the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour. The Mastercard APGA Player Achievement Award will provide Johnson with financial support to play on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, which tees off December 1-4, 2022 at the 116 Visa Argentine Open presented by Macro in Buenos Aires, Argentina followed by the Neuquen Argentine Classic in Chapelco, Argentina before moving to Santiago, Chile from December 15-18 for the Scotia Wealth Management Chile Open presented by Volvo. “Mastercard is focused on creating an equitable and inclusive society, including a commitment to increasing diverse representation,” said Rustom Dastoor, Executive Vice President, Marketing & Communications, North America at Mastercard. “Together with the APGA and Skratch, we are proud to highlight the stories of APGA players, in addition to providing unforgettable opportunities and resources to support their personal and professional development.” A teaser for the first season was released earlier today on Skratch’s social channels including YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. The first episode will launch tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 20 and will feature Johnson winning the 2022 Mastercard APGA Tour Championship followed by the release of the second episode on November 2 which will include an appearance from 2022 PGA TOUR Rookie of Year Cameron Young. Season 2 will be released in 2023. “We are excited to work with Mastercard to launch this series and highlight the incredible stories of the individuals playing on the APGA Tour,” said Skratch General Manager Sam Raeburn. “Skratch strives to support diversity in golf, attract a millennial audience and reach a more diverse fan base and we believe this series will do just that.”
