The five key clubs for the International Team at the Presidents Cup

Quail Hollow Club, the venue for this week’s Presidents Cup, is rightfully regarded as a big ballpark. But don’t focus solely on the length of this layout that measures at more than 7,500 yards. With two drivable par-4s, a range of more than 60 yards in the par-3s and reachable par-5s mixed in with beastly par-4s, every piece of equipment will be challenged, especially when you consider the variety of formats in use this week. As the International Team looks to win its first Presidents Cup since 1998, and the United States team hopes to continue its winning streak, GolfWRX has broken down the five key golf clubs for each team, with insight from the respective players. Below are the clubs that we think could play a big role for the underdog International Team if it hopes to score the upset. TAYLOR PENDRITH’S DRIVER Ping G410 LST (9 degrees; Project X HZRDUS Smoke Green Small Batch 70TX) 2022 stats: 12th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee; 10th in Driving Distance (316.1 yards) Pendrith says: “It’s an older model, but I’m comfortable with it. Just when I set it down, it looks great to me. Sits a little open. …I’ve got lots of confidence with it. I’ve been using the same model for three years, probably, now, and I’ve driven it great the last three years. So the numbers, I don’t think, really can get much better. I’m quite happy with it.” GolfWRX says: If there’s an older model driver in a PGA TOUR pro’s bag, it’s probably for good reason. As one of the best drivers on TOUR, Pendrith seems to find confidence with the familiarity of his Ping G410 LST, which hit the market in May 2019. It’s important to remember that if new technology doesn’t provide better numbers than your current gamer in terms of dispersion and distance, then don’t feel the need to upgrade. As a PGA TOUR player, Pendrith has access to the latest and greatest drivers on the market, but he still sticks with his 3-year-old model. When it’s crunch time with a tournament or match on the line, Pendrith has three years of good memories to lean on, especially after a successful rookie season on TOUR that included a runner-up at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and top-10 in a FedExCup Playoffs event (T8, BMW Championship). SUNGJAE IM’S WEDGES Titleist Vokey Design SM7 (48, 54 and 60 degrees) 2022 stats: 12th in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green; 12th in Proximity from the Sand (8’, 1”); 5th in Scrambling (66%) Im says: “I use an SM7, Titleist SM7, which is maybe a couple generations old with 4 degrees of bounce – not a lot of bounce – with a little bit of relief on the back and have used it for about four years. Nothing really special, but that’s the model that I like and I’ve been using for the last four years.” GolfWRX says: With Quail Hollow playing so long, as well as birdie opportunities for those who can get up-and-down on the short par-4s and par-5s, Im’s scrambling could be key. Titleist has new SM9 wedges out on the market now. The company’s SM7 versions came out in 2018. As some of the most personal clubs in the bag, wedges must be selected based on look and feel preferences, but it’s also important to match the sole construction and grind to how you deliver the club to the ball, and to the course conditions you typically play on. High bounce wedges are typically better suited for those with steep angles of attack (i.e. players who take deep divots), or soft conditions, whereas low bounce wedges – like the ones that Im uses – are better for those with shallow angles of attack, or firmer conditions. Higher bounce wedges (10-12 degrees) often provide greater margin for error, so beware of using a 4-degree option like Im. COREY CONNERS’ DRIVER Ping G400 LST (8.5 degrees, UST Mamiya Elements AU shaft) 2022 stats: 5th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee; 78th in Driving Distance (302.7); 20th in Driving Accuracy (66.8%) Conners says (about his swing): “I think just having good rhythm has always been sort of a hallmark of my game and something that I focus on every week. The last few days (at the Presidents Cup), just been feeling the good rhythm. That allows me to hit the ball solidly, and usually it results in it going where I am looking. I … just take some practice swings, try and feel the body moving in sync, (take) a few practice swings … with my right foot kind of behind me a little bit, feeling the body moving, club staying in front of the body, and that helps with my rhythm, as well.” GolfWRX says: Like Pendrith, his fellow Canadian and former Kent State teammate, Conners is one of the TOUR’s top players in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, but he does it differently. He gains strokes with his accuracy off the tee, a hallmark throughout his bag. Conners also was second in greens in regulation last season. Another similarity between Conners and Pendrith is that they both play older Ping drivers. Pendrith’s G410 LST came out in 2019, and Conners’ G400 LST is even older, hitting the market in July 2017. By coupling low-spin technology with a stable design, Ping’s G400 series of drivers was a killer in the market and on TOUR. Clearly, it’s still making an impact half a decade later. HIDEKI MATSUYAMA’S SHORT IRONS Srixon Z-Forged (4-9 iron), Cleveland RTX 4 Forged wedges (46, 52, 56 and 60 degrees) 2022 stats: 6th in Strokes Gained: Approach-the-Green; 1st in proximity from 125-150 yards (19’, 1”) Matsuyama says: “To be honest, I feel like I wasn’t playing that good. So I’m not really sure about that stat. I wasn’t playing very well.” GolfWRX says: Matsuyama famously has high standards, as evidenced by the many times we’ve seen him hit a shot, hang his head and take a hand off the club in disgust, only to see the ball land near the hole. His above quote also shows that he is not easily pleased with his play, even though it resulted in two wins last season. After triple-checking the stats, Matsuyama did indeed finish sixth in Strokes Gained: Approach – the eighth time in the last nine years he’s finished in the top 10 of that stat — and he finished first in proximity from 125-150 yards. It’s scary to think what it would look like if he hit the ball as well as he thinks he’s capable of. Matsuyama made big equipment headlines when he switched to an unreleased Srixon ZX5 MKII LS prototype at last week’s Fortinet Championship. His irons and wedges are a bit older – his Srixon Z Forged irons came out in 2019, and the Cleveland RTX4 wedges released in 2018. CHRISTIAN BEZUIDENHOUT’S PUTTER Odyssey White Hot OG #7 2022 stat: 6th in Strokes Gained: Putting Bezuidenhout says: “I recently changed to an Odyssey No. 7, that fork one. I actually changed to it five months ago. I used to putt with a similar putter when I was younger. I just changed to that. I feel like I’m starting the ball on-line better, and the stroke of the putter just flows better with that. … I’ve always used a mallet putter, face balanced mostly. What I’ve got now, it’s a face-balanced mallet. So it’s basically the same style of putter that I grew up putting with.” GolfWRX says: To celebrate its 20-year anniversary of the original White Hot insert, Odyssey released a lineup of White Hot OG putters last year. Bezuidenhout’s putter model is part of the White Hot OG family, and his specific option comes with a double-bend hosel. The hosel construction allows the putter to be face balanced, which means the putter face will face the sky when fixated on its balance point on the shaft, i.e. if you balance the shaft on your finger; this helps add stability to the stroke and keep the face from rotating. It’s best suited for golfers with a straight-back and straight-through stroke style (as opposed to having an open-and-closing arc style stroke).

A running list of custom gear and equipment for the 2019 MastersA running list of custom gear and equipment for the 2019 Masters

Every year for The Masters — due to its rich tradition and iconic green-and-yellow colors in the logo — golf companies design and release custom products in the event’s honor. Instead of singling out specific products, we wanted to highlight as many of the cool products as possible for The 2019 Masters. Below is a list of custom Masters-themed gear and equipment that we’ll continue to add to as products get unveiled to the public. Did we miss anything? Send your submissions to @andrewtursky on Twitter or Instagram. Enjoy! Limited-edition Bettinardi putter While Bettinardi doesn’t advertise the BB1 Copper Classic putter specifically as a Masters-themed putter, its “Spring Seasonâ€ limited release has an obvious Masters influence with the green-and-yellow colorway and special green grip. The special BB1 head model is made from 303 Stainless Steel with a copper, honeycomb-milled face insert, it weighs 355 grams, and it comes with a Lamkin Deep Etched Cord grip. The BB1 Copper Classic is being released on April 9 for $800, and only 250 putters will be available. It also comes with a quilted leather headcover. Jordan 11 Masters shoes These Jordan 11 Masters-inspired golf shoes are part of a Nike “Snake Packâ€ release. The Malbon Golf-collaborative shoes have green snakeskin on the upper, a reflective sole plate equipped with golf spikes, and Malbon’s prayer hands on the tongue colored yellow with hits of green, for obvious reasons. If you look closely, there is also a small red Nike logo on the tongue inside the yellow hands, a nice touch for fans of the Nike logo and brand. As per Jacques Slade’s updated report on Twitter, the Jordan XI shoes will be available on April 12 for $200. Cobra “Camoâ€ driver On the equipment side, Cobra has released a special-edition “Camoâ€ version of its new King F9 Speedback driver. Cobra also reports that Rickie Fowler will use a matching Camo-printed Vessel-collaborative staff bag at The 2019 Masters. The Camo pattern blends the outlines of the United States and the state of Georgia, a shoutout to both the Masters logo and Augusta National’s home state. The Cobra Camo driver, available in 9- and 10.5-degree lofts, comes equipped with a special military-green Project X Even Flow Blue shaft, and a Lamkin Crossline Cobra Connect black grip that also has military-green accents. The driver is currently available for purchase, selling for $499. Click here for more information regarding the Cobra King F9 Speedback driver’s technology.  Caddie Covers As per Masters tradition, the caddies wear white jumpsuits with green numbers on their chest. Swag Golf, a Chicago-based putter company who also makes custom putter covers used by TOUR players including Keegan Bradley, created a special Masters cover with a shoutout to the caddies and their uniforms. Each Swag headcover comes with a different number, and if the headcover purchased matches the winning caddie number for The 2019 Masters, a bigger surprise is in store. G*LF Lids Devereux, a company that makes apparel and accessories for more than just golf, is releasing Masters-themed G*LF and Augusta hats for The Masters. The hats were made in collaboration with New Era, and they’re available for $35 in various colorways — not just green-and-yellow – for a subtler Masters vibe. A bag and covers that cover it all TaylorMade’s custom staff bags and headcovers for The 2019 Masters have it all, with shoutouts to Augusta National’s native flowers, caddie jumpsuits, caddie numbers, and even the yardages of each hole. Scroll to the left on the embedded Instagram post above to see all of the custom Masters gear from TaylorMade. Leather-scented flowers For its 2019 Masters-themed headcovers, Callaway teamed up with Olivia Herrick Design and Seamus Golf. The design features the flowers for which each hole at Augusta National is named, including of course the famous Azalea.

Lovelady tied atop Barbasol leaderboard with help of new mindsetLovelady tied atop Barbasol leaderboard with help of new mindset

NICHOLASVILLE, Kentucky – No one told Tom Lovelady he wasn’t fun to be around anymore. “People are still rooming with me this week,â€ he said with an easy smile. “Must not be too miserable.â€ But even so, Lovelady knew he needed an attitude adjustment. He was letting the bad shots get to him and the missed putts gnaw at him. It was counterproductive, and he knew it. “I finally said, I’m sick of it,â€ Lovelady reported. “I don’t care what bad breaks I’m going to get, I’m going to live with it because everybody else gets the same. “Really just came from inner belief and motivation.â€ His new mindset has paid dividends this week at the Barbasol Championship. Lovelady made four straight birdies starting at the 14th hole on Saturday en route to a 65 that left him 18 under and tied atop the leaderboard heading into the final round. Lovelady, who will be looking for his first TOUR victory, has plenty of company at the top. He’s tied with Robert Streb, who matched the day’s low round of 63; the resurgent Hunter Mahan, who had a 64, and Troy Merritt, who had a 69 and set the first- and second-round pace. Lovelady, who played at Alabama with Justin Thomas and Trey Mullinax, is hitting on all cylinders at Keene Trace Golf Club this week. He ranks first in driving distance, second in Strokes Gained: Around the Green and No. 1 in Strokes Gained: Total. So Lovelady – who turns 25 on Monday — knows he’s doing something right, and he hopes to keep things on an even keel for the final round. “Just treat each shot for what it’s worth, and if you hit a bad shot just go get up and down,â€ he said. “I think that that’s the mindset that I’ve had this week. It’s just been really good for me. “Past few weeks I’ve struggled. Just been tired and I’ve kind of let that get me. I just got fed up with it. Mentally this is one of the better weeks that I’ve had and it’s shown, and looking forward to tomorrow.â€ NOTABLES Amazing what a little bit of job security can do for a guy. Sam Ryder earned some last week when he tied for second at the John Deere Classic, moving from 148th to 115th in the FedExCup in the process. He came to Kentucky a little more relaxed, as a result, and after Saturday’s 63, his seventh consecutive in the 60s, Ryder has a chance to win his first PGA TOUR event. “It’s given me a lot of confidence,â€ Ryder said after the bogey-free round at Keene Trace. “And also there’s a little bit of a monkey off my back in terms of the pressure of trying to keep my job for next year. So it’s allowed me to play a little more freely and just kind of trust my game.â€ Ryder will start the final round at 17 under and one stroke off the lead. He was looking forward to the late tee time, too, after having to play 36 holes on Saturday. “I can feel it in my legs and hips and stuff,â€ Ryder said. “I’m definitely in need of some rest going into tomorrow. But when you start making a bunch of birdies and you get 7, 8, 9-under, a little bit of adrenaline will carry you through those last few holes. QUOTABLES A lead is — it’s kind of a false word or leading you in the wrong direction because you’re going to play somuch golf tomorrow and there are going to be so many fluxes and you’re going to need all 18 holes to try to pull away from these guys.Probably a fan’s paradise. Everybody is going to have a chance at it. Probably come down to who is hitting them close and making the putts. SUPERLATIVES Lowest round: Robert Streb, Sam Ryder and Blayne Barber each shot 9-under 63s. Longest drive: Tom Lovelady had Nos. 1 and 2 in this category. He hit one 371 yards on the 14th hole and 349 on No. 13. Hardest hole: The ninth hole, a 421-yard par 4, played to an average of 4.096 with nine birdies, 50 pars, 12 bogeys and two double bogeys. Easiest hole: The sixth hole, a 516-yard par 5, played to an average of 4.178 with three eagles, 54 birdies, 16 pars and just four bogeys. SHOT OF THE DAY

Koepka takes out WGC and Wyndham RewardsKoepka takes out WGC and Wyndham Rewards

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Brooks Koepka sauntered into TPC Southwind just 45 minutes before his final round showdown with Rory McIlroy and the elite chasing pack at the World Golf Championships – FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Clearly sporting some sort of illness all week, Koepka had people nervous as to whether he was going to be ready to play at all as the minutes ticked by. They need not have worried. The 29-year-old joined 54-hole leader McIlroy at the top just three holes into Sunday’s final round before taking the lead outright on the fifth hole. He would never lose control from there, posting a bogey-free 5-under 65 to win by three over Webb Simpson. McIlroy failed to create the epic showdown all had hoped for and was relegated to just a bystander with his 71, falling five shots back. With his first World Golf Championship win, Koepka now boasts seven PGA TOUR titles, six of those coming in a little over two years, four of which are majors. He not only wrapped up the tournament, but also the top spot in the regular season long Wyndham Rewards battle and its $2 million bonus, a week before the final event. And barring Alex Noren making two albatrosses next week on the par-5 15th at Sedgefield Country Club, Koepka claimed the $1 million Aon Risk Reward Challenge. All up that is a $4.745 million Sunday. Not bad work if you can get it. “It’s incredible. To look at what I’ve done this year, just show consistency, try to take my game to a new level and I’ve done that. To be up there in the FedExCup with a chance in Atlanta, that’s incredible,â€ Koepka said. “But to win the Wyndham Rewards is incredible. That’s what you shoot for. You want to be No. 1, when the season’s done and going into the Playoffs, and then to add Aon Risk Reward, it just comes from the consistency. It’s incredible to look at how much you could have won today, and to do it, it’s been incredible.â€ Koepka has three wins this season including the PGA Championship and THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES. He was runner up at the Masters and the U.S. Open and was fourth at the Open Championship. It was the quick trip back from Northern Ireland and it’s tough weather that left Koepka vulnerable to illness this week. But he was not making excuses. And he claimed coming in late was far from a big deal. “It doesn’t affect your play. It doesn’t affect me hitting a golf ball. I mean, I don’t feel good. I haven’t felt good all week, but I don’t want to make an excuse, I’m not trying to complain. Just get on with it. People go to work sick all the time,â€ he said. “I always take less time on Sunday. I’m already loose when I get to the golf course. I don’t even need to hit balls. I’ve already stretched, I’ve already done everything. I don’t know why everybody else is in a panic, I’m not. I’m sure you didn’t see one ounce of stress on my face.â€ He’s right on that count. It was a stress-free day for Koepka as the chasers failed to mount enough pressure to worry him. McIlroy missed a short birdie putt on the par-5 3rd and it went downhill from there. Simpson shot a tidy 64 on Sunday to post his best result since winning the 2018 PLAYERS Championship but never actually caught Koepka. Marc Leishman had five back nine birdies, but a couple of bogeys also meant he was never really in the hunt. Now that he has the regular season locked up, Koepka can set his sights on the FedExCup proper. He finished 10th in the FedExCup in 2016-17 and ninth in 2017-18. “The year’s not done, I’ve still got a few things to finish off and hopefully it will go my way. I haven’t thought that far ahead, but if I did (win it), that would be incredible,â€ Koepka said. “This run I’m on the last couple years has been so special. I’ve given myself some good chances but I’ve just never played well in the Playoffs. I don’t know what it is, whether it’s just a little burnt out or what, but I haven’t gotten it done. So this year, in a little better shape. Hopefully a week off will just kind of relax and take it easy and then get back in the swing of things.â€ Even if he waits until Thursday to turn up at THE NORTHERN TRUST, you’d be brave to bet against him.
