The First Look: Wells Fargo Championship

THE PLAYERS Championship titleholder Rory McIlroy, the only man with two victories at Quail Hollow Club, makes his first start since Augusta as a traditionally strong field returns to Charlotte to begin the final push before the PGA Championship. Reigning FedExCup champion Justin Rose is back after a two-year hiatus, having placed third in his last visit in 2016. Jason Day is the defending champion, seeking to become the event’s first back-to-back winner and join McIlroy as the only multiple winner. FIELD NOTES: Justin Thomas returns to Quail Hollow for the second time since making the 2017 PGA Championship his lone major title to date. He tied for 21st a year ago. … All told, the lineup boasts 14 of the top 30 in the current FedExCup rankings. … Phil Mickelson is back for his 16th visit in 17 editions, still seeking an elusive first Quail Hollow win. He owns 12 top-12 finishes in the event, including a share of fifth last year. … Though Tiger Woods elected to bypass Quail Hollow this year, the lineup features his three predecessors as Masters champion: Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia and Danny Willett. … Zack Sucher, sidelined 19 months in 2017-18 by an unspecified injury, will attempt his first TOUR start since the 2017 Travelers Championship. He’s made six starts this year on the Web.com Tour. … Two men are set to keep perfect Wells Fargo Championship attendance – Rory Sabbatini and J.J. Henry. FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 points. STORYLINES: McIlroy returns to a place where he has finished outside the top 10 just twice in eight visits, though one was last year’s tie for 16th. He won in 2010 with a final-round 62, then again in 2015 with a Saturday 61. … Webb Simpson, whose home lies minutes from Quail Hollow, seeks to reverse his current fortune on home turf. He’s missed the past two Wells Fargo cuts, though he also has a pair of top-5 finishes in his back yard. … Day’s victory last year marked just the second time since the tournament began in 2003 that anyone has posted four rounds in the 60s. Lucas Glover was the first, doing so in 2011. … Just one of the past nine defending champions has managed a top-25 finish, when McIlroy took fourth in 2016. Five of those nine never made it to Sunday. COURSE: Quail Hollow Club, 7,554 yards, par 71. Now a perennial top-10 entry among the PGA TOUR’s toughest courses, Quail Hollow hosts its second Wells Fargo edition since a year off to conduct the PGA Championship. The course ranked as the fifth-toughest on TOUR last season, ahead of two major venues (Augusta National and Bellerive). It was an undisputed No.1 after hosting the 2017 PGA, showing its teeth after a Tom Fazio upgrade that included three redesigned holes. Originally laid out by George Cobb in 1961, the course already was known for its “Green Mile closing stretch which is annually rated among the toughest on TOUR. Quail Hollow was the original site of the Kemper Open (1969-79) and later the World Seniors Invitational (1980-89) before the TOUR made its return in 2003. For those visiting the Charlotte area, must-play courses include Birkdale GC (Huntersville, N.C.), The Tradition GC (Charlotte, N.C.) and Skybrook GC (Huntersville, N.C.). Book your reservations via TeeOff.com. 72-HOLE RECORD: 267, Rory McIlroy (2015). 18-HOLE RECORD: 61, Rory McIlroy (3rd round, 2015). LAST YEAR: Day rallied from a mediocre start for his second victory of the year, recording a pair of birdies along the vaunted “Green Mile to rise two shots clear of Nick Watney and rookie Aaron Wise. Day carried a two-shot advantage into the final round, but spun his wheels by playing the first 15 holes in even-par while Wise pulled alongside. A 10-foot birdie at No.16 gave Day sole possession of the lead again, and his tee shot at the 230-yard 17th took four bounces before kissing the flagstick for a kick-in birdie. Day collected his 12th PGA TOUR victory, moving within one of Adam Scott for second all-time among Australian pros. Watney drained a 59-foot birdie at No.18 to tie for second with Wise, who recorded his best career finish. HOW TO FOLLOW TELEVISION: Thursday-Friday, 3-6 p.m. ET (Golf Channel). Ho Sung Choi: What’s in the bagHo Sung Choi: What’s in the bag

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Korean golf professional Ho Sung Choi, with his “fisherman swing,â€ is such a viral sensation that he’s received a sponsors exemption into the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week. For equipment fans, that means we finally get to see what clubs he has in his bag. In many of Choi’s viral golf swings, it’s easy to tell he’s been using a TaylorMade M4 driver, but the rest of his setup has remained a mystery. On Monday, during the practice rounds for the three-course AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, I tracked down Choi to get a look into his golf bag. Our questions about his clubs have finally been answered! Here’s a look at Ho Sung Choi’s full setup. Driver, fairway woods and hybrid As expected, he’s using a TaylorMade M4 driver (10.5 degrees), and it’s equipped with a UST Mamiya V2 6FS Tour prototype shaft. He fills out the top end of his bag with a Callaway Epic Flash three wood (15 degrees) set to neutral with a Fujikura Evolution V x-flex shaft, and a Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 815 hybrid (20 degrees) with a Fujikura MCH 90X shaft. Irons Choi is using TaylorMade’s 2016 Japan Gloire Forged irons that are made from Forged Stainless chromoly 4140 steel. His irons are equipped with Nippon N.S. Pro prototype shafts. Wedges, with a lucky number “8â€ Choi has two Titliest Vokey wedges (50 and 58 degrees) in the bag, each with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts in them. His 58-degree is a K-grind with 6 degrees of bounce. Choi’s translator told me the number 8 is stamped onto his wedges because it’s his lucky number. There are three reasons why the number 8 is significant, according to his translator: 1) Choi and his wife are 8 years apart from each other, 2) he started playing golf on the 8th day of a month, and 3) when the number 8 is traced, it goes on for infinity, instead of ending. Putter and golf ball Choi is using an Odyssey O-Works Red Jailbird Mini putter with a double-bend hosel and the stock Odyssey grip. He also uses a Titleist Pro V1x golf ball with “low numbers,â€ according to his translator. Custom Headcovers Clearly, Choi has fully embraced the “fisherman swing,â€ with a logo of his own. He’s using Selmo headcovers, each inscribed with his name and logo. Also, his custom, all-white iliac Golf carry bag has his logo and name on it.

Si Woo Remains Right At Home On Big StageSi Woo Remains Right At Home On Big Stage

ERIN, Wis. – At times on Friday at the U.S. Open Si Woo Kim showed a passionate temperament but for the most part THE PLAYERS Champion looked as cool as a cucumber in the Wisconsin heat. If you thought this 21-year-old Korean was a flash in the pan it appears you might need to rethink. Kim backed up his opening 69 with a solid 70 at Erin Hills to sit at 5-under for the championship, well and truly in the mix for another huge trophy. Not far removed from his dismantling of TPC Sawgrass, Kim showed a steely focus as he stalked his way through these rolling former farmlands in his very first U.S. Open and just third major championship. It took one extremely vocal Korean fan yelling encouragement in his native tongue to break the glass eyed stare and concentration, but after a quick smile and a wave it was back to business. It was the same story after the odd disappointing shot or putt. Kim would release his tension with a putter flip or he would pretend to want to snap a club in two… but within seconds his focus returned. “He doesn’t hold anything in, caddie Marc Carens admits. “He gets it out and then he is always ready for the next shot, which is great. “His game seems to get better every week. It continues to evolve. Despite being a winner at the 2016 Wyndham Championship his PLAYERS victory still caught many by surprise. The main reason is a continued battle with back problems. And added to that was an ankle complaint which saw him withdraw from the Memorial Tournament during the second round recently. But as his health improves, so does his confidence. Kim currently sits seventh on the International Team standings for the Presidents Cup at Liberty National later this year. He’s hoping to solidify his place with another big week at Erin Hills. Captain Nick Price has already endorsed him as an up and coming talent who he hopes can help end the American stranglehold on the biennial event. “THE PLAYERS gave me a lot of confidence, Kim said. “I’d love to make the Presidents Cup team and hopefully I can continue to play well this week and the rest of the year. “I just have to keep doing what I’m doing. Another to approve of his potential place in the team is 2013 and 2015 International player Marc Leishman who was paired with Kim over the opening two rounds at Erin Hills. “His emotions might still be a bit raw but his game certainly isn’t, Leishman said. “He certainly has plenty of game and could be a great addition to the International team. “It really seems like he has a handle on playing under pressure, I guess THE PLAYERS proved that. Should Kim go on and win this week he would become just the fifth player to win a major in the same year as his PLAYERS title and just the second behind Martin Kaymer (2014) to win THE PLAYERS and the U.S. Open in the same season. “I feel confident but still nervous, he admits as he heads to the weekend. “But the key will be much of the same and some better putting. Hopefully I can make some more putts and then we will see.
